RE: HOW BIG CAN I GO???
Well if yours are stock at 245/70/16 then lets look at the other options available for that year...
Mine are 265/70/16 stock and the 17 inch stock chrome wheels use a 265/70/17 which is an inch bigger yet in diameter.
You also need to define bigger as diameter or width or some combination of the two...
Remember larger diameter will effect your gearing and make it accellerate slightly slower.
It will also make your speedo read slow, but you can get that fixed at the dealer if you want to have the computer reset to the new tire size.

Find a tire you'd like to buy and enter your current size into the calculator. Enter the 17 inch size into one of the other slot(s) (since you know they will fit).
You should be ok if you stay at or below the 17 inch size tire in dimentions.
A tire 265/75/16 is almost the same as the 17 inch stock tire and should work. It is around 2" bigger in diameter than what you have now.
I you want some width too, a 275/70/16 is approximately 3/8" wider than the 265/75/16 but is half an inch smaller in diameter which should help keep the extra width from rubbing.
The 265/75/16 is the largest diameter tire that falls within the range of factory tires used by dodge and it is likely to be cheaper than the rest due to it being a popular readily available size. It has been used for years and most manufacturers make that size so lots of choices.
I don't have the 17 inch wheels and tires so I don't know if there is enough clearance to go any larger. So if you want bigger still you might need to see how much room a Dakota with the 265/70/17 wheels has and pray a little if you're going to experiment.
I'd personally like the 275/70/16 in BFG AT/KO for my winter tires and I may get those at some point!
I'd also like a set of 20x9 wheels and 295/45/20 for the summer...
