Replacement Speakers with Stock Radio?
I have an 06 SLT Quad Cab. Single disc with 4 speakers (one in each door). Sounds like I have cotton in my ears listening to it. I'm wondering if anyone has just swapped out the speakers and kept the OEM radio and what kind of results did you get? I would like to avoid installing an amp, new head unit, etc.
Dodge.com seems to indicate the factory single disc unit is 66watts so I'm assuming @16 watts per channel? THX

whewnever your adding new speakers you should really seriously consider adding an amp. 16 watts per channel is nothing, any good set of speakers usually will require about 30-50 watts to even register properly at regular listening volume, thus you are seriously underpowering them and then on top without an amp your speakers will still sound like cotton jammed in your ears, you will not be able to listen to it even close to as loud, and if you do crank it up to 100% volume you'll most likely be ruining whatever speakers you are buying. Get an amp in other words, its worth every extra little penny even if its just a cheapy sony/jvc/pioneer model.
I did just a speaker conversion on mine (since i like my 6 disc mp3 head unit) the only thing you have to look outfor is oversized cages on any speaker you buy. heres a link to what all i went through: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2073077/4 - i bought all my wiring/control module at walmart and it sounds great at every volume level

Welcome aboard gatruck,
You have a couple options to choose from. If you for sure want to stay with the stock Hu look for speaker that are rated from about 2-50 watts rm with a sensitivity above 90db. Those will sound okay off of HU power. Anything below 90db will require an amp to sound decent/good. I know Infinity and Alpines fit that bill for just HU power. There are others as well just look around. As Drakkon said your best bet is to use an amp for your speakers. And upgrade to a set of components up front. Look at Profile amps. They are a great budget amp and you can probably get a 4 channel for around $100. And they come with a low level converter which you have too have to use an OEM HU. I'm replacing my stock HU and adding a sub. My components will be run off a Profile AP600 for $88 to the door and the sub off a Profile AP700M for $96 to the door. If you choose to go with coaxs all around you will need to fabricate adapters out of 1/4" plywood so the tweeters don't hit the door grill. You have to use an adapter to mount 6 1/2"s as the stocks are 6 3/4". Aint worth the money for 6 3/4's as you have way more options with 6 1/2's. Another option if you don't want to add a sub but want decent bass. You can go with components up front and 6- 6 1/2" woofers in the rear. Run a 4 channel and low pass the rear channels for a little more punch. Ultimately you are the only one that needs to be happy with it so go with what works for you. Just offering options. Either way you go let us know what you do cause it will for sure sound better than the stockers.
Good luck and happy shoping.

I hear ya gatruck. $$$$ is everything. I've been putting together all my components since last July when I bought the truck. I did however get tired of the rattle in the front right mid and replaced those early on. Something else to remember- If you don't like your highs real bright and ear piercing go with soft dome/silk tweeters. Still get nice crisp highs but on the softer side. Good luck and hope you like your truck.

this is one thing ive learned....if your gonna do it, do it right. when it comes to audio, you get what you pay for. dont buy crap cuz it will sound like crap...i learned this the hard way... so i ended up tarin all the ****ty stuff out and putting good stuff in...$1900 later i have some thump....if i would of done it right the first time i would of saved alot of money
Well, I got these today... Alpine Type S 6 1/2"

I replaced all 4 door speakers. Installation was a breeze, took about 30 minutes... I did pay a bit more ($79/pair) and bought from Crutchfield so I would get the wire harness and detailed instructions. I am very pleased. World of difference. Very clean even at high volume. Of course I would really like to add a sub but at least I can actually here my cd's now.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Those are good speakers and have pretty decent low end for a door speaker. Think they sound good off of HU power, put an amp to them! I just got a Kenwood HU from Crutchfield's because they included all the install parts. And if I have any problems they are just a 1-800 call away.
Glad we were able to help.

Add the MTX Thunderform like I did (if you got a Quad Cab), but DEFINITELY upgrade the MTX sub! It goes behind the rear seat.
Sounds AWESOME for 1 10" sub with my JL W1v2, I love it.
Best part...doesn't take up any room.
Then the amp is under the bottom of the seat.
