You get a 6 speed manual in the new Dakotas, if you didn't know (not a 5 speed anymore)

First off....with the 4.7 V-8 and an automatic....you have the 5 speed (545RFE) automatic transmission

Because you can only get the 4 speed automatic with the 3.7 V-6

Second.....the 4.7 V-8 automatic transmission automatically comes with 3.55 gears (which you most likely have)

3.92 is a $40 option which would be listed on the Window Sticker when you bought it

If you don't have that, check the inside of your glove box to verify what you have (should be a white sticker on the inside) or give your VIN to your Dodge parts counter & they can tell you

thats odd, a guy i know runs a mechanic shop and he searched some program to find out my transmission and he said there was NO 5 speed automatic, only 4 speed....he even picked the V8 and everything......wow, thats crazy

Dan, Don't waste your time with Derrick. From his posts he does not have a clue about anything. I doubt whether he has a dodge anything.

Ok to clear things up here, for a brand new 06' Dakota here are the powertrain options:

(SLT) Laramies only come with auto's

3.7 V6= 4 speed automatic or the 6 speed manual

4.7= 5 speed automatic or the 6 speed manual

4.7 H.O.= 5 speed auto ONLY

in your case (for towing) i would pick the Dakota SLT sport with the 4.7 V8 6 speed manual.......many years of loyal trucking for you.

When people say that their truck tows like mad, i wonder what their comparsion criteria are. I want to tow about 5,500 lbs, going up some hills. Going up hills from a stop also, and on some dirt roads. May do some long distance towing if the truck would be up to the task. I know it won't be a rocket, but I don't want to be going 25 up the long extended hills.
So, what are you towing, the weight, and road conditions.
We're going to test drive one tomorrow. The only one around with the full time transfer case.
Thanks, Rob

You DEFINITELY have the 5 speed automatic

(I had the same tranny in my 2002 SLT Club Cab 4.7....so it's been around for like 5 years now)

It has 5 gears....but when you're driving you'll only feel it shift 4 times.....1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th

The major difference is that it's also got two 2nd gears........one if for upshifting & the second 2nd gear is for when it downshifts (they have different ratios). So when you punch it, it downshifts to a different 2nd gear that gives you a more aggressive response.

Hope that makes sense

Here's more info on the tranny & shows the two 2nd gears I was talking about:
