What do you mean by a code to get them replaced? :-\

My dealers business manager is like my best friend. Maybe he could just hook me up with the code. :-)

if you want to replace you cats with better flowing ones go to a joe blow shop, not a muffler shop. i had to pay my guy in cash to have my converters removed. no record of payment and no receipt. if i get stopped it my fault. if you use the existing 02 sensors you will not through a code. just have more power by dropping a cat

Did you put new convertors on though?

If so, how is it your fault? I mean, I can understand how it would be your fault with no convertors on there.

Because it's against federal law to tamper with the emissions system (converter, EGR, EVAP, Air Pump, oxygen sensors) unless there is a problem with it. If you gut your converter, that's tampering. If you put hi-flow converters on, that's tampering. If you remove your converters, that's tampering. Shops can get in big trouble for doing anything but replacing a converter because of defect.

And it would remain his fault (or anyone's) even with different converters on because it's something he asked the shop to do. In theory, the shop should've told him NO. Most shops will end up doing the work...but they (around here at least) will ONLY do it if you tell them (or in some cases sign a waiver) that you will accept the responsibilty/blame for it if you ever get caught. They also will not warranty the work and require you pay in cash with no records (recipts, bills, etc). They're trying to cover their own *** from any legal reprecussions, and you really can't blame them.

I've heard of some shops that have offroad "contracts" that you can sign, stating that you are only going to use the vehicle offroad. And if you're caught driving it on the road, it's still your *** in the sling. But not too many have something like that.

i still have the original ones with the o2 sensors but the other one was junk. most people now take a metal pole and shove it through the converter to open them up. still has the factory look but much more air flow

If for some reason the cats were not functioning as designed as in plugged or something the brain should pick that up and give you a check engine light. Tech will OBD it and it will come up a bad cat. Then you take it to your muffler shop with the paperwork from Dodge showing it needs to be replaced and install the high flow cats. All legal schmegal. as all have said you don't want to get pinched for screwing with emissions stuff-BIG TICKET!

TASTE THE HEAT AND ENJOY THE PAIN

ok then question, if oyu HAVE to have it replaced, and say you get pulled over, how would you prove to a cop that you have a legit reason to have the new ones on. Would you get paper work from the dealer?

Just to clarify for everyone....

There are two cats, one on each bank right off the exhaust manifolds. Each then funnels into the 'y-pipe'. These are the Catalytic Convereters that can not be messed with/removed by federal regulations.

From the 'y-pipe' there is a single 2.5 out that then connects to the first resonator, then the muffler and then yet another resonator. Thus the standard 'cat back' systems connect at the 'y-pipe' and eliminates both resonators and the muffler (obviously the new muffler goes in its palce).

See the picture attached of the system I removed from my 4.7L

I have also attached a dwg of the 3.7L system right out of the service manual. Note it looks very similar to the 4.7 except no resonators are shown! You can also see the pre & post cat bosses for the O2 sensors in the drawing.
