I put in the K&N Aircharger and I can tell you that under 'hard' acceleration, you can really hear it sucking in air. Just putting around town and under 'normal' acceleration, you really don't hear much.

ORIGINAL:
The 'black box' is an air intake resonator. It is 'tuned' to try and reduce intake air noise at audible frequencies. If you remove it, there will likely be an increase in noise. There would likely also be a minimal improvement in efficiency.

In addition it does indeed make a good cheap place for engine 'badging' for the marketing guys.

So the sound is only noticable in accleration? I would not mind if my truck starts to sound like a truck at least when I hit the gas. I do hope to keep the sound down while making long highway trips.

I have the K&N 63 aircharger on my 4.7. Under hard acceleration it has a cool sounding whistle, much like a turbo. But under putt-putt or highway cruise conditions there is no noticeable increase in sound or resonance.

The tube inside the plenum is not solid, but has openings that lead into the dead spaces on either side of the tube. The IAT sensor by the way, is housed in one of these voids in the plenum. Since the plenum sits on top of your hot motor and the IAT sits in a (hot) void w/poor air circulation, obviously the IAT readings will be off resulting in improper engine performance. Maybe even a cause of the rough idle issue plagueing a lot of dak owners. A straight thru CAI is surely recommended. Also one would think a plastic K&N tube would not get as hot as a metal tube from other manufacturers. Don't forget, the CAI sit over of your hot motor like the plenum does. And the IAT is placed in the rubber mount up against the throttle body on those metal ones, where as, it is farther down the tube by cooler incoming air on a K&N.

Now thats interesting, I did not know that could be behind the rough idling. That certainly makes a good reason mod the intake with at least the airaid tube.

I have the airaid tube, stock air filter box with a K&N filter. I removed the plastic air inlet piece bewteen the fender wall and the stock box. Also removed part of flap by the washer fluid and coolant fluid containers to get more direct air flow from the front. Still using the stock sparkplugs. I have not had any problems with truck running or rough idling. I did modify the TPS to .725 volt no hesitation when you step on it.

How did you modify the TPS and what is stock voltage?

Woo... that kinda moding is way beyond me. I'm an OC'er not a motor-head < no offence intended. All I know is that stuff I don't know.

Any how I wanted to add the question what exsahust out their is cheaper and offers more proformance with little change in sound? I'm not looking for a whole cat-back just a muffler for now.

Cheap? You have to be careful what you get for cheap. My old man always said,"Buy the best (quality), and you'll never regret it." Most times good quality means not very cheap. Here's the Flowmaster address, click on mufflers when you get there. It will give you info on their mufflers to help you decide what you're looking for (should you decide to go w/ Flowmaster). That way when you go price shopping, you know what model you're looking for. Also check other MANUFACTURER'S sites for their product info. The manufacturer's site will usually provide the best info about their own product, but not the best price. Shop after your decision.

Well turthfully I want to go gibson but their price is too steep at the moment. So is flow master one of the better manufacturers?

I'll rephrase my question for you so it don't say cheap: Who makes a good performance muffler without increasing the sound too much?
