Default code check

just wondering, is there a way to check engine codes without a reader? I know on my t-bird you could jump 2 wires together and the engine light would give you the codes in like a morse code way and the 3rd gen rams turn the key on 3 times and it will give codes in the odometer, what about the 3rd gen dakota's?

My brother-in-law's check engine light came on on his '06 Dakota, and I held the trip meter button down and turned on the ignition key to the run position. It showed S722, C542, and .319. Don't know what those are right yet, but it did the gauge check and told how many hours the engine had on it also...
