LSD vs Locking Rear
I know my 4.7HO has a Limited Slip Diff. But...
I saw a MotorWeek from last week that showcased the new Chevy Siverado and the sister GMC Sierra. The two wheeled drive versions had a mechanically locking rear diff. And they showed two trucks climbing a test incline, with roller bearing along one side--so only one back tire would spin on it-the other tire on hard pavement. Well, they first showed the truck with the LSD and due to the limited nature of LSD, the other non-spinning wheel tried to "grab" but really wouldn't. It was unable to climb the incline. Then they did it with the new mechanically locking diff and it was really amasing. The rear locked up and the other wheel drove the truck right up that ramp. Really impressive.
So, although our LSD is better than NO LSD, it sure seems like that locking rear end would be great to have (I live in New England). Just thought I'd start a discussion on the matter.
Happy Holidays, too!

RE: LSD vs Locking Rear
My truck has the "Anti-Spin Differential" I don't know about yours. Try something...Put a floor jack beneath the pumpkin, jack it up so BOTH wheels are off the ground, put the transmission into neutral and spin either wheel forward or even backward. You will notice something. You will see that BOTH wheels spin in the same direction. Many/most LSDs do NOT do this. I know this to be true because I used to have a '66 Pontiac GTO with an LSD. When you tried this test, both wheels spun in opposite directions but it would leave two black marks on the pavement when you punched it. One was simply shorter than the other. This truck (if you can get the tires to break loose) will leave two even marks. This may not be a "locker" but it is as close as you can get to that without going to a 4x4 supply outlet and buying a locker with a cable...actually better due to the clutch pack. Both wheels are turning on this truck. The clutch pack inside is so you can turn a corner without wheel hop. I hope this helps.

my buddy hs a 06 gmc sierra 4x4 an he has a locker in it. and when he punches the gas from a stop in the rain one wheel will spin and then all of a sudden you will hear a "BANG" and then the other wheel will kick in. I dont know if all lockers are supposed to do that, but he took it to the dealer and they said thats normal for it do it. but to me it doesnt sound right.

One of my main hobbies is rockcrawlin, a toyota truck, only thing completely stock on it is probably the gas tank At any rate I've drove it around with a detroit in the rear for many years. Gotta have it for max traction, but for a vehicle not intended to be taken off pavement really (like the dakota[sm=ummmmokay.gif][sm=badidea.gif]) not neccessary. Not sure about the GM ones but the aftermarket ones have quite a lot of play engineered in them to work right. A detriot gives 100% traction to both wheels all the time, it'll bang once in awhile when it disengages the outside wheel in a corner. It will never bang when you start to spin, both tires just spin, that's allThe extra slack in the driveline might be a little annoying in a street only rig[sm=boohoo.gif]
