RE: Exhaust? 06 dakota
The quick, easy and cheap(er) way - go to a local muffler shop, have them yank off everything from the Y-pipe back (both resonators, muffler....) Then, have them run 2.5" aluminized pipe from the Y-pipe into a Flowmaster 40, and exit it either out the factory location or in front of the rear wheel. Probably run you around $250 installed, give you a nice, deep, throaty roar for not too much $$$.
If you have some $$$ to spend, or choose to upgrade down the road, you could always go for the Flowmaster or Magnaflow stainless systems made for the truck. Mucho dinero for exhaust though, IMO

RE: Exhaust? 06 dakota
I just bought a used 06. For its exhaust, all it has is two "small cannisters" , one on each downpipe before the y-pipe, then the y-pipe, a long straight pipe to the rear axle, then a small muffler just as the exhaust goes over the rear axle, then out behind the passenger side rear tire. Is there not a catalytic converter after the y-pipe, before the muffler, or are the 'small cannisters" on each down pipe cats?

Sounds like what you have is an aftermarket set-up, with both resonators already removed and an aftermarket muffler. In the factory system, those canisters are the cats, follwed by a Y-pipe, and then it goes into two 'gigantic' resonators, followed by a 'gigantic' stock muffler. Looks like your truck already had all that yanked out and a new muffler added, free of charge!
