The oil change from Hell...
my first oil change was a disaster too. did not have problem with the filter but the oil never made it into the bucket. all over me and floor. now i go to jiffy lube, and let thempour oil all over them selves. 39.99 cant complain and they even do windows vaccum and other stuff.

Jr. go down to Autozone get a Fram Sure Drain model SD-2, it's a valve that replaces your drain plug. It has a twist on drain hose, stops that oil on the crossmember mess.

The owner's manual didn't recommend the first oil change at 700 miles?!?

I did my first oil change at 500 miles, went to full syn. No problems with the oil filter, but the cross member was a pain. I had to put a rage on each side of the cross member just to get the oil to drip into the oil pan correctly. Since I only change the oil once a year now, I end up rediscovering this problem each time I change the oil.
I would be nothing short of amazed if they didn't recommend an oil change within the first 700 miles. Even if they didn't, I would still do it. Keep in mind that is when everything is being seated within the motor, and the heaviest amount of metal debris is being produced. Not only that, but you will want to get those fluids out, who knows how long they were in it before you bought it. Changing your oil within 700 miles ensures that the hardest time on your motor (break-in) goes as smoothly as possible. I think we need to get a break-in procedures sticky up top.
