My dak came factory equipped with limited slip, and I believe the part Dodge uses is called a Dana Trac-Lok. So that's the part you'll need. I think they usually run about 250-300. Or you could go with a Detriot True-Trac. It's a better part, but it's also more expensive...in about the 450 or so price range. In fact if I were gonna do it from scratch and could spend the extra 150 or so, I'd go with the Detroit.
+1 to what dpk241 said. Find a reputable shop that does ring and pinion work to install it for you. From what I've seen on this board, labor should run 200-300. Labor should be the same $$$ whether you go with the Dana, Detroit, or something else.

Got me... I thought you could only order a limited slip differential...

babygotdak it really comes down to what you plans for the truck are and what the truck is. Is it 2wd or 4wd, does it have the 4.7 or 3.7, is the reason you want a LSD that you want better off-road traction, pavement launches etc...
The trac-loc that is optional equipment on the Dakotas is a perfectly fine stock differential. It is a friction type LSD and works acceptably. Aftermarket friction type LSDs like the Auburn Gear or Eaton Posi units are generally better than the trac-loc. They have higher breakaway torque and better durability. The Detroit Truetrac is a helical gear type LSD and is probably better for the street as it is quieter and smoother than the friction types. It also has the ability to transfer more torque to the wheel with traction than the friction types. The downfall is with off-road the Truetrac is not so great because if a wheel is completely unloaded then they differential loses all ability to transfer torque and will act like an open diff.
So to keep an already long story from getting longer. Let us know of your intentions than we can make a recommendation that you would be most happy with.

I have a 4.7 4x4 not the all time just part time. I want to have better all around traction as it seems as though if i am turning up hill i am always spinning a tire. now i know that some will say i have a heavy foot, and i do. Hence the reason i would like to upgrade. i am not opposed to stock, but i know that many times a "dealer upgrade" is as expensive as an aftermarket that may out perform. so with that said.... it comes down to somthing that will give me better street traction. was the tracloc standard or was it an option because my truck feels like an open dif. thanks for all of the input.
The trac-loc is an option on everything butthe 4.7HO, TRX and TRX4. It is standard equipment for those.
As a course of action I would suggest that you get a quote for the Mopar trac-loc unit, the Eaton Posi and Auburn LSD. You can try the Detroit truetrac but I have a feeling that they are more expensive than the others listed. I know for my mustang the Eaton posi was cheaper than a replacement Trac-loc from the dealer. The link I posted earlier in the tread would be a good place to start for comparitive prices. For reference your truck has a Chrysler/Dodge 9.25" rear end.
After, you have the quotes for parts you can look for a shop that you would trust to install the diff. It would be safe to assume that the price would be the same for any of the different LSD options. The install in not hard to do BUT it is also not hard to screw up. Unless you are experience with diff installs or you have a friend that is, I would reccommend getting a shop to do the work.
Once you have the quotes you can weight your options based on your budget and performance improvements.
