Default 2011 Durango -Added DVD at Purchase - Static!!!

Hi everyone,
Just trying to see if anyone has had this experience becuase I'm extremely frustrated at this point and looking for advice on how to deal with the car dealer.

I purchased a 2011 Durango AWD (picked up friday!) with the advice of Adding leather and Dvd to save money. I was promised both products would be factory grade. The leather is katzkin and came out great but I'm the DVD player has turned into a nightmare.

Quick Rundown-
-Picked up car Friday
-Could not play audio through speakers, come to find out you need to turn FM on with DVD controller and then change FM Radio to 88.x or 89.x frequencies
-Major Static on every frequency, I'm frustrated they would even put a system that is not hard wired into a brand new vehicle!!
-Brought car to shop Monday and the custom company could not fix issue, needed to keep car overnight because the hard wired FM modulator was also not working
-Today (Tuesday) I get a call the car is fixed, went to dealer to pickup car. Sure enough the DVD audio sounded better at first but as soon as I closed the car doors the Major static was back.
-Got Service Manager involved and let him know I was extemely frustrated at the quality and that the custom company does not have a solution other than the FM Modulator. Shouldnt these systems be hard wired to an AUX these days?

Tomorrow is day 3 of this, my new car purchase is now tainted and not at all the experience you would hope for. I know some people may think it's only a DVD player but having 3 small children who are used to the dvd sytem, it's a lifeline for me.

Any suggestions on how to deal with these guys going forward? Do I have any right to demand a factory system at this point if the issue isn't fixed on this 3rd attempt?

Unfortunately you likely can't get a factory system -- ever -- since it wasn't put in the car at the factory. The real problem is that you probably paid top dollar for a less than top dollar system. I think your best bet is to try and get your money back if you're not satisfied with the product (the DVD install). Then you can buy either a cheap system with wires (they are very cheap now days), or you can buy an expensive wireless one. Either will be headrest based. You can go very high-end wireless, but you are talking major bucks.

I'm pretty much in line with this post. I have long thought that car makers didn't need to be in the business of Audio/Video outside of a basic system. The aftermarket has them beat by leaps and bounds dollar for dollar. Always will. We've done a few of those Katzkin installs, they look pretty good. On a side note, the service manager should have been involved on the second visit without you having to make it happen.

I tend to agree with the other guys here. The dealership obviously used a 3rd party to provide an inferior product or bad installation. Either way, you didn't get what you paid for. Perhaps this last (3rd) visit is really as much as you should be expected to endure for this issue. The dealership is the one that you have paid to supply a working video system. They have not delivered, so they should refund your money and return your vehicle to stock.....or they should have a properly working system installed.

We have kids and know that a video system is paramount to a successful trip. I don't have one in my D, only in my wifes T&C minivan.

This may be a far fetch crap shoot but it may be worth a try...

There is an audio out from the screen... using these 2 parts is "may" I dont know since i have not tried.

Use this cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Male-3-5mm-Ste.../dp/B000I23TTE
from the audio out of the overhead screen to this "dongle"
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluet.../dp/B002DTRO9Q
pair the dongle with the radio and use the bluetooth audio on the radio.

Just a wild idea i dont know if it will work or not.

from my installing days RF mods have always been terrible. it doesnt help that most screens have them built in to the screen too. the "better" rf mod you actually connect at the back of the radio and you plug the rf mod into the radio, and the factory antenna into the rf mod. these ones usually work better since they "cancel" out the incomming signal.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealer today. Won't mention names but they are in Weymouth MA, just for a warning.

I feel they should do whatever is necessary to make this "right", purchasing a 35k car and this happening the first day, you would think they should be held accountable.

This is definitely the last shot before I tell them to take it out and never go back to the dealer again. It's a shame because they are 1/2 mile down the street and maintenance is easy.

Hopefully they will fix it. Hey, you are in Weymouth, MA.....do you know a company there named Electroswitch? I've been there to visit the factory.

Update:
Some good news, they replaced the system and actually gave me an upgrade, larger 10 inch screen audiovox system which is pretty nice. The sound is now hard wired and sounds perfect, the service manager was also very apologetic so I do feel better about the entire thing.

I'm excited to have the car back and think I'm going to purchase some weather tech liners tonight for my first add on.

Thanks again everyone for the advice.

Have not been to the electroswitch in Weymouth, anything good there?
