Yes, but today the roads are ten times more crowed, and kids have all these gadgets to be distracted with. I'll never forget my first solo ride. It was winter and I was shaking the whole time. What I had forgoten was to turn on the heat! . Today kids don't even have to think about turning on the heat, but there are 100 other gadgets to distract them in the car.

I still have no violations, and I had a incident but the other kid wiped of the mark and I hadn't left a scratch (bumped him while parking). Any ways I learned on a 99 chevy tahoe. But I drove a 92 explorer for 6months before getting the D. Keep in mind I got my license at 14 and drove since well, before I was 14 (off-road). If I ever have kids they are learning on backroads and gravel were no one else is like I did.

I would take a D over an exploder POS any day.

I did a test drive on the Explorer but the ride seems too stiff for my taste and steering seems kinda numb feeling to it. The D just have the right balance, great seating position and much better/superior AWD system than the Explorer! The Hi Tech 'My Ford Touch' is quite buggy, some friends and co-workers bought Explorers are disappointed on this system...touch screen so slow and takes you a day to learn to use it. The D was much simpler took me only a few minutes to learn the nav/radio/bluetooth function. G/L on your decision!

I was a tried and true Ford guy for the last several purchases. ,91 Explorer, ,96 Explorer, ,01 F150, '05 F150. Needless to say I was also "set" on the Explorer. Wife wanted to drive the Durango and GM trifecta (Enclave, Venture, Acadia) before buying. No imports in my garage!

Drove the Exp first, not as impressed as I thought I would be (noisy V6, HUGE expanse above the dash and HUGE A pillars). We were sold on the Durango (V6) in first 5 minutes. Drove the Hemi also to see the difference. I don't tow so the V8 was a want and not a need. $2k upcharge for the V8 is a big chunk for us. Wife's car is a '08 Charger RT Hemi so that is the fun to drive vehicle. Never even drove the GMs.

Picked up a white V6 Citadel with Tan/Black interior two weeks ago. Added chrome step bars yesterday. Love the truck. The adaptive cruise control, rain sensing wipers and blind spot monitoring is awesome technology.

Dislikes;
Navigation system is not very good. My $180 Nuvi is MUCH better with basic stuff. I cannot even rename a saved location (i.e "Moms house"). If you can get the Nuvi based system, as in the Grand Cherokee (and Charger?), get it.
I wish I would have gotten the Hemi. No remorse, just the macho want thing coming through!

Otherwise no doubt we made the right choice.

Congrats and you made the right choice in picking up the Durango over the Explorer!

Can't speak to the Explorer, but did drive a FLEX, which I was told is the same basic chassis as the Explorer. The Durango is a much nicer, refined ride. And even though the D is about the same length as the Flex, it doesn't feel as big when you are driving it. Combine that with the fact that I'd never really by another Ford after they failed to honor the warranty on my ESACPE, I was sold on the D.
