I'd have to agree that it wouldn't hurt, however just not a smart idea to leave it.

As for leaving the key affecting the battery; if it's not turned then it shouldn't do anything.
But as for leaving the key in the vehicle over night...bad idea. Now sure how old your kids are, but when I was about 5 or 6, my dad left his keys in the ignition of his Chevy Astro for about half hour, I went in and saw them. Me being curious, I guess I turned them got it into drive. Kids are unpredictable haha
Also, my grandmother's neighbor had her car stolen because of this. The garage door was opened by the thief during the night, the key in ignition, and gone...

The reason why we know this wonderful phrase, "Sh*t happens," is because sh*t Does happen. Don't give someone the opportunity

Just looking out for ya, my friend

And as for garage doors, regardless of the type of system, if the opener is not installed and aligned properly, anyone with a little strength can just pick your door up and move it back along the track.

I used to live in a very quiet, upscale, neighborhood and when we heard about a car being stolen we were all aghast. Then we learned that the neighbor left the keys in the car and one of their teenage son's friends took the car.
