Default To Sipe or not to Sipe?

Over Christmas dinner I was telling my cousin that my wife is not happy how the Durango slides on ice compared to her old Honda Accord. From what I have read, these factory tires are not so good (to put it nice). He suggested I get them siped. By the way, this happens to be his suggestion for everything. Since he works for Discount Tire I can get this done for free. I have never had this done to any of my tires (I buy the right ones so it's not required - my opinion). I have read a lot on line and it mostly looks good but the main argument against it is if it is that good then why doesn't the factory do it. As for the Durango, I will buy better tires when these wear out.
Should I get the factory tires siped?
Anyone have any experience with tire siping (pros/cons)?

IMHO, snakeoil circa 2011. Back in 1970, maybe. Today, no way. Again, JMHO.

Sounds like your better off just buying new tires, if the guy your talking about works at discount i bet he could give you a great deal on new tires anyway. I wouldn't let anyone cut into my tires to try and give it better traction lol

Siping - waste of money IMHO....just buy a set of good/quality tires, check out the reviews on discount tires and tire rack so you know which is the best one to get.

These tires only have 4000 on them. I don't have money burning a hole in my pocket where I am just going to go out and buy a new set. I will run these tires until they are done. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and if there is a down side to siping.

Just buy a set of tires for snow and change out to the stock tires when it warms back up.

No reason in taking any chances....

Which tires do you have, Khumos or Continentals? AWD or RWD, there are numerous differences in the vehicles compared though I know this does not answer your question.

I have bought many sets of tires through discount but never siped them. Since he can do it for free I'd try it out and report back. They tried selling me a tire guarantee this past weekend for approx. $25/tire which covers a multitude of things for the lifetime of the tire. It can be added to factory tires and is way cheaper than buying a new set. Just a thought since I'm probably going to add that soon. Not affiliated with them, just know tires cost too much always at the wrong time

Do NOT sipe. You will have all sorts of warranty issues for something that is pure snake oil.

Either put some proper snow tires on, or eventually stud the tires of possible (my stock tires are studdable, but I am in Switzerland so do not know if you have the same brand.)

Frankly proper snow tires are the way to go.
