V6 vs V8 Citadel on quietness
I rented a V6 Citadel for an overnight trip and was amazed at the vehicle. I'm definitely getting one. My question is what is everyone's experience on the quieter vehicle, the V6 or V8? I'm in Florida and don't tow so I don't need the V8 especially if it is louder therefore more annoying. Thanks.
With the new quiet cabin designs, the D is sealed up so well that you hear and feel very little inside even with the V8; road noise is practically non-existent. Obviously if you mash your foot to the floor the HEMI will come alive and growl, but I don't see the problem. I have driven my Durango from Northern Virginia to Jacksonville, FL and it was one of the quietest and most comfortable 750 mile drives I have ever taken. You can always carry on normal conversation at normal volumes regardless of throttle position.
One of the things that impressed & sway me towards the new Durango is the very little interior noise from idling to being driven on the road and its well behave handling. I was set to buy an MDX but came upon a chance to see the 3rd gen Durango in a car show last year, out of curiosity a few months later did a test drive and was impressed....bought one. The MDX (w/ the advance package option) was a nice looking ride but the road noise intrusion just doesn't cut it for a vehicle with a luxury price tag. The Durango Citadel was the better deal for me with all the bells and whistles without the price tag of the MDX.
Wasn't able to test drive a V-6 since at that time of my purchase there wasn't any available but later on came accross and heard from other owners the pentastar powerplant is quiet and very much adequate for the job to push the Durango.

Our Durango is very quiet. However, as it is the V6 it likes to be revved more in order to get that mass of a vehicle moving...so you may hear more noise more often with the Pentastar...but I haven't driven the Durango with the Hemi either...

The V8 is hardly a beast when it comes to noise. And someone made a good point that the V6 needs to revved more to get it going. So in essence you may experience more noise from the V6 given particular circumstances. But I test drove both, and didn't find noise to be an issue with either. It's a very quiet car. My father drives a luxury European sedan, and even he was impressed with how quiet the D was. If you don't need the V8 and can find a V6 with the options you want, save yourself some money on the purchase and the gas.

My '11 Crew has the V6 with tow package. It is a very quiet ride either towing or not - very impressed with this engine. I have nearly 8000 miles on it to date and have not had one problem with vehicle. I test drove the V8 when deciding, and felt the V6 would be very adequate to pull my 3800# boat or just move people/cargo. I have not been disappointed with noise, reliability, power or MPG. The V6 would be a good choice in my opinion and I'd do it again if making this purchase today.
