My '11 Crew has the V6 with tow package. It is a very quiet ride either towing or not - very impressed with this engine. I have nearly 8000 miles on it to date and have not had one problem with vehicle. I test drove the V8 when deciding, and felt the V6 would be very adequate to pull my 3800# boat or just move people/cargo. I have not been disappointed with noise, reliability, power or MPG. The V6 would be a good choice in my opinion and I'd do it again if making this purchase today.
My neighbor just took delivery of a '12 JGC overland with the V6, he took me for a ride and was impressed with the power, smoothness and quietness of this powerplant. If there was a V6 available at the time of my Durango purchase I would have opted for it. Dodge/Chrysler plans to incorporate direct injection, multi-air assist on this engine and mate the 8 spd auto tranny to most of their models which currently the Chrysler 300 has the 8 spd.
