Default Oil Change interval

Bought myself a brand new 2012 citadel back in November 11'.

At 3500 miles the oil change message came on. The maintenance schedule in the owner's manual says the first oil change should be at 8000 miles or 6 months. When did you guys make the first oil change? According to the message indicator or the owners manual? Any thoughts?

Rock,

I am posting the wording from the owners manual just to clarify why the light may come on so soon. 6 months or 8k is the maximum that should not be exceeded.

Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change
indicator message will illuminate. This means that service
is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions
such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or
cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will
influence when the “Change Oil” message is displayed.
Depending on operating conditions, the message may
appear as early as 3,500 miles (5 630 km) since last reset.
Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within
the next 500 miles (805 km).

Rock,

There are so many opinions on oil change intervals and what brand oil to use that you can find a ton of threads on them in this forum. If you search "oil change" you will see what I am talking about.
