I'm not sure how many people know or realize that in order to fit HID kit bulbs on our D's you need to slightly modify the H16 bulbs.

It's real simple and just requires patience.

I highly recommend that you wear latex gloves while working with the new bulbs to avoid contaminating it which will shorten it's life span.

There are three small tabs that I point out in the pictures below. Take a new box cutter or blade and trim these three tabs flush with the body of the bulb. Take your time, trim a little bit at a time until done.

That's it!

Depending on the bulb manufacture, the bulbs sometimes come out of the holding clips easily. Quick fix for that is once installed into the fog light housing wrap the bulbs around the clip area with electrical tape. I like to do that for insurance anyway.

So what, you buy the bulbs shave them down like said and switch them out? Anyone know what color or manufacture would best match our headlights?

 

My ddm kit finally arrived today, time to trim em up and install them! I went with 4500k btw.. here's to hoping they match!

 

My experience with DDM kits is that they are going to be slightly blueish compared to OEM even if you did order 4500. You might get lucky.

Post some pics when you're done, I'm curious to see how it turns out.

I think you know but just in case, what you need to get is a complete HID kit. A kit is complete with (2) Ballasts & (2) Bulbs. The bulbs come in various kelvin levels;

3000K - Yellow
4500K - OEM Purest White color
5000K - White
6000K - White/Blueish tint
8000K - Blue
10,000K - Deep Blue
12,000K - Purple

I don't recommend anything other above 8K. because you'll start losing actual light output. Also for fog light applications I wouldn't go above 35w kit so you don't run into any issues with heat or fuses. Your average 35w is 300% brighter than halogen bulbs!

Our D's use an H16 bulb.

Trimming was a success but managed to break a clip on the bulb suggestions John?

 

If you can secure the bulb into the socket wrap it around two times tightly with electrical tape, that should do the trick. Other than that your only option is buying a pair of bulbs.

I can supply them already trimmed if that gives you a piece of mind. Personally I don't think you'll have any issues if you tape it well.

Btw did it break while trimming or installing?
