Default Inexpensive Alternative to Cold Air Kit

For $44 I bought a K&N cone filter and just removed the top of the air box. The crankcase breather tube that was connected I put a small filter on so it can continue to breath. I have noticed a little more pep and it sounds sweet. Figured for under $50 it was worth a try. I am sure the cold air kit has way less restriction but this is also around $200 cheaper. I have a ram air hood on my D that helps get fresh air in. Name: 45CE95D6-B27B-4609-A233-F7B55D594A21-6902-00000EB22203D893_zps66c3da48.jpg

Where did you purchase the filter? I think i may try this. Hot summer air is much cooler when you are dirving 75mph, my worry is sucking in hot engine bay air.

I bought the filter from pepboys to make sure it worked, then returned it and bought the same filter on ebay for $10 cheaper. I figured in the summer you will be sucking in hot air through the stock intake regardless and I have the hood sucking in fresh air to make up for the hot engine bay air.

Cool

The stock intake sucks in "cold" air through the gap in the front of the hood. I checked temps with a thermocouple while driving. The factory intake temperature was five degrees warmer than ambient at constant throttle. My AIRAID intake was 12* warmer with the heat shield in place. I have no doubt that the OP's intake temperatures will be quite high on a hot day...maybe on a cooler day too since the engine compartment is so well sealed. The only way to tell is to use a remote sensor like I did.

That said the OP's kit will certainly work and is less restrictive than the factory system. Sucking through that Z bend really slows down the air, it's possible that the cone by itself will suck enough hot air to make up for the lower volume of colder air from the factory intake. No intake is going to make a huge diffrerence in performance on a near-stock truck anyway. It is a good mod regardless.
