Default Extended warranties

I have bought a 2011 Durango, 3.6L with 42K kms on the odometer. (I'm in Canada). Dealer is pitching a Gold + Powertrain extended warranty for "dealer cost", which is $4,130. It gives me 7 years, 160K kms from new, which is another 5 years and 120K mileage for me.

This is a huge upfront cost for the insurance peace of mind and I am beign told it covers EVERYTHING, except brakes, wipers and fluids. Bascially I am being told that it extends the standard 3yr/60K km warranty to 7r/160K. This seems too good to be true. Has anyone had hany experience with this?

This is my first SUV/truck and my first AWD so I don't have any idea what the repairs costs (or the risk of big repair costs) of this vehicle might be over the next 5 years. I have always bought used (cars and vans only - GM and Ford) and have never bought these expensive warranties and never regreted it. I take care of my vehicles so that they last 8 years at least.

Any one available to help?

Cool

First, why pay for 2 years of coverage you do not need? Extended warranties are a dine a dozen and you can get them any time. Wait until your factory warranty is up before purchasing an aftermarket warranty.

Second, be very careful about what the warranty covers. My sister purchased a 5 year extended warranty from a dealer which was supposed to "cover everything". Three months after the factory warranty expired she needed to replace front strut bushings - not covered - $800. A month later the amplifier for all sound (radio, phone, etc) went out. Coverage denied. $1900 out of pocket. She would have been ahead without the extended coverage. I'm not going to say not to buy one, but wait until your current coverage is about to expire and shop around. You can most certainly beat the dealer's price.

Probably the worst "investment" you can make. Put that money in the bank or invest elsewhere and use it to cover repairs you incur as you go. You'll be money ahead.

Check the Dodge site http://www.dodge.com/en/service_cont...57&state=Texas. A 7/100k plan is $3,785. Maybe the diff is the exchange rate? What currency are you using? And there could be some room in that. My local dealer has a $250.00 coupon for a Max Care policy (scroll all the way down) http://www.demontronddcj.com/specials/service.htm. Be care about whose warranty they are selling. This same dealer offers their own "Warranty Forever" http://www.demontronddcj.com/warranty-forever.htm Now to the question about should you? My Gen 1 had the entire rear axle, front driver seat, and a/c compressor replaced. First 2 items happened inside 3/36 (miles), and the a/c went at 90k miles. $1,300 for the a/c. Frankly after seeing some of the issues on this site, and looking at all the sexy things that can break, I will likely opt for a Max care policy while my new D is inside 12/12 (miles). The Max Care provides for a free first day rental if you have to leave the D, even if you are still under the 3/36. The wife is against it, saying I take good care of the cars so why bother. I intend on keeping the D for a long time. It is a tough decision.

Also keep in mind Geico has a Mechanical Breakdown option if you have insurance through them. That option costs only ~$70 a year.

Dave,

If it's a Chrysler contract you can check out the plans offered in Canada using the website below to check coverage. Brochures are also available to be viewed on these products towards the bottom of the page in the link.

I would consider getting the lifetime maxcare warranty if they offer that in Canada.

I paid $2,695 US on day 1 for Chrysler Lifetime Maximum Care. Had the cash in hand. First extended warranty I ever purchased, but plan on driving the wheels off my D for 10 years.
