Default Air Filter

Anyone replace the factory air filter with an after-market one (not an upgrade)? I tried to put in an STP replacement filter and had a hell of a time getting it to fit. It seems the rubber lip on the replacement was somewhat bigger, and the cover just didn't want to seat back on top. With some elbow grease and a few cuts and scrapes later I got the thing together, but I don't know how well it's really sealed.

Yes, I have an AEM "drop-in" filter and have had excellent results. Highly recommended.

Thanks. Not interested in spending that much on an breather. Just wondering if anyone had trouble getting the lip to fit inside the cover.

It's possible you didn't have the inboard (towards the engine) catch tabs seated below the two catches.

I just changed out my filter yesterday and the accordion tube limits the range of motion so you have to seat the tabs at an awkward angle (one at a time) before lowering the outboard (towards the fender) edge over the filter and locking the metal latches in place.

That's certainly part of the problem. I actually had the hardest time seating the inboard tab closest to the front of the car. It seemed to have a different connection from the inboard tab closest to the rear of the car. I hope something's not broken on mine...

CAI and catch can will go on eventually, but other financial concerns have taken precedence.

I know you said not an upgrade but I have a K&N drop in and it fit tighter than a stock but still went together well.

If anyone has a picture of the inboard tabs that would be great. Then I could be sure nothing is broken. I certainly won't buy another STP replacement filter.
