Default sand experience?

Has anyone had any experience using there Durango on the beach. I know they are only AWD but there is a 4x4 low option. With airing down I feel it might be OK but my concerns are ground clearance. Can anyone speak to this or is this a complete no go situation?

Depends where your driving, tires, and level of experience. I've seen Honda Pilots on the 4x4 beach in OBX NC.

It's not so much the vehicle. It's the density of the sand. Sand with a higher water content is prime for driving on (no don't go driving in soaked sand).

Personally I avoid driving on sand. Okay once in a blue moon. But I try to avoid it often. Gets into places you don't want and tears things up that much quicker.

In the early 90's in Jax FL we had a 4runner 4wd that would constantly get stuck, and a clapped out Pontiac Fiero that my buddies and I tried to destroy on the beach and it would never get stuck. Everyone told me it was due to weight, but I never understood it. If it was due to weight though the DD doesnt stand a chance!

And it helps trap moisture to feed the rust worms.

Jxa990,

As Immo said, it depends where you plan on driving. The LOW range should be limited to extreme situations such as deep snow, mud or sand when additional low speed pulling power is needed. When you are in LOW range it is not recommended to exceed speeds of 40km/h (25 mph).

Keep in mind, after extended operation in sand, mud, water or similar dirty conditions, have the radiator, fan, brakes rotors, wheels, brake linings and axle yokes inspected and cleaned as soon as possible. This information and more can be found on page 445 of the Owner's Manual.

Good info, I would do the tow hook mod (if not installed already) before trying it though, there is a post on installing them on here somewhere I think.

I take my V6 AWD on the beach a lot. The front lip on the bumper scrapes which has caused my front bumper to lossen up. Otherwise it works just fine. I usually air down to 20psi. I always wash my undercarriage down after driving on the beach.
