I've wondered that myself, but the only piece I've ever bothered to pry off is the ring around the shifter/center console.

I would imagine they would pop off fairly easily using a flat edge screwdriver or similar tool as you would removing the lens from the overhead lights. Give it a try and let us know . . . :-)

Not sure how thick the 'chrome' is, but perhaps you could knock down the shine with some sandpaper and a light touch to give it a matte/brushed look.
