Default Dodge Durango Remote Start: engine turns off after a few seconds

Dear all,

since a couple of days I have a strange problem with the Remote Start on my 2011 3.6L Durango.
When I start it with the Remote Start, the engine turns off after few seconds, here is a
Unlike another similar case with a 2014 Jeep Wrangler, shown in
, my problem is not caused by the empty fuel tank, I have plenty of petrol in my tank

A message in the dashboard tells that the remote start was disabled, but no reason is given

Searching over the internet I have stumbled upon this article and applied the suggested procedure
1. Start your vehicle’s engine with the key.
2. Press and hold the foot brake down.
3. While keeping your foot on the brake, press the KEY or remote start button button for 3 seconds.
4. Release the foot brake and remove the key from the ignition.
but it did not work, the problem with the remote start remains.

Any thoughts?
Has anyone here experienced something similar?

There is a list of INHIBITS in your owner's manual that will disable remote start. One being low fuel which is common.

REMOTE STARTING SYSTEM

The Remote Starting System allows the vehicle to be started up to 300 feet (91 meters) away from the vehicle using the remote keyless entry key fob which is part of your ignition key. In order to remote start your vehicle, the hood, liftgate, and all of the doors must be closed. To remotely start your vehicle, press the “Remote Start” button twice within 5 seconds. To indicate that the vehicle is about to start, the parking lights will flash and the horn will sound briefly. Once the vehicle has started, the engine will run for 15 minutes. To cancel remote start, press the “Remote Start” button once. To enter the vehicle while the engine is running during a remote start, you must first unlock the vehicle using the “Unlock” button on the key fob. After the vehicle is unlocked, you have 60 seconds to enter the vehicle, insert the key into the ignition, and move it to the RUN position. Otherwise, the engine will cancel remote start and automatically turn off. Remote start will also cancel if any of the following occur:

  • If the engine stalls or RPM exceeds 2500.
  • Any engine warning lamps come on.
  • The hood is opened.
  • The hazard switch is pressed.
  • The transmission is moved out of P (Park).
  • The brake pedal is pressed.
The vehicle can be started remotely up to a maximum of two times. The vehicle is also allowed a maximum of one failed start. This can occur when the remote start sequence was initiated but cancelled before the engine begins to crank or the engine stopped cranking without starting. After either of these conditions, or if the Vehicle Theft Alarm is alarming, or if the PANIC button was pressed, the vehicle must be reset by inserting a valid key into the ignition and moving it to the RUN position, then back to LOCK.

Hello dear Friend.
Yes the main reason is low amount of gas in the tank but you showed us the screenshot where we see that you have some gas in the tank.
But please tell us what is your average MPG right now?
I am asking because i had the same thing, let me tell you:
(my gauge is set to KM that's why i'll describe in KM)
My remote start turns off just as yours when i have really little amount of gas.
One time i had the issue you described - i had like 1/4 of the tang full but the engine went off for the reason of low gas. And then i remembered that i have done the average gas usage reset last night and therefore my average was about 33/100km instead of my normal 20/100km. Therefore the system calculated that with my current average gas usage this amount of gas is too little and turned off the engine.

So please check is everything ok with your average usage index and try to start the remote with full tank of gas.

Hope this helps.

Smile [solved] (I hope)

Thanks for the reply, they have been very useful in nailing down my issue and for documenting here in the Forum the most common cases where the Remote Start might fail.
In my case, this morning I have noticed some irregularities in the engine while idling. The "Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)" was on, and it has been on for a few days now, with no noticeable problem, till this morning. This reminded me of the condition "Any engine warning lamps come on." for stopping the Remote Start, this made sense.

I thought that maybe those irregularities could have been caused by one of the injector being partially obstructed, maybe due to poor fuel quality from the last tank (who knows) and/or the fact that in the last weeks I have only driven very slow and only in the city. So I decided to let the engine run at high RPMs for some tens of seconds. Then once home I turned it off and then on again. The MIL light was now off. I tried to remote start the car and this time it worked flawlessly.

I hope this closes my case, if not I will keep you posted.

If the engine stalls or RPM exceeds 2500.
Any engine warning lamps come on.
The hood is opened.
The hazard switch is pressed.
The transmission is moved out of P (Park).
The brake pedal is pressed.

You sure it's nothing mentioned above?

As I said in post #4 and also gently highlighted by TNtech in post #2, yes my case is most likely "Any engine warning lamps come on."
The rest is unlikely, I was not in the car to press the brake pedal, the transmission in Park mode, no hazard lights, hood closed, RPMs were not over 2500.

Yeah, that's one of the worst parts about having the check engine light come on, no remote start. Lol.
