Alright so I was one of those people. I bought a new Durango without the tow package. All gesting aside there were a few other features, specifically captains chairs with no console that trumped having the tow package..... now that I have the vehicle I'm proposing to my wife towing a travel trailer with it....

So all that being said I went through the list of equipment, or at least what is shown/advertised... I have the hemi which comes with the heavy duty cooling.... the dealer said the trailer braking is there in software and they can add all of the harnesses...

Is it really down to the load leveling suspension that is limiting me hitting the 7200lb weight??

When I bought my '13 R/T, I was under the impression that ALL hemi's of that year were equipped for towing. If you didn't have a hitch it could be added, which I did. The dealer reprogrammed the car to tell it that a hitch was now in place. The load leveling suspension was there as was the harness, and I was able to confirm that later by getting the "build" sheet. I will look for it shortly and post the relevant info. Now things can change over 4 years, so don't get your hopes up. I'll also try to find the info on how to get the build sheet.

 

I'm hoping that's the case... I've emailed dodge asking for the build sheet. I know I have the cooling and other stuff, I'd be really surprised if the suspension leveling is really the constraint.

 

Found the build sheet. Unfortunately I can't attach it so I pasted it in. I sent an email to dodgecares@gmail.com with my VIN and got it back quickly. The items I bolded are the ones I think you should be looking for. BNTS - Trailer sway damping. SESP - rear load leveling suspension. I could not find the wiring harness mentioned on the build sheet, but it was already there. I crawled under the car and found it before I went to the dealer to get the hitch. Again, remember, 4 years ago. Good luck.

Greetings - THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE - I'M GLAD TO SEE OTHERS ARE DEALING WITH IT. We bought a 5,300 lb travel trailer then began shopping for a tow vehicle. I DID A LOT OF RESEARCH - The dealer and all the info I found BEFORE the purchase said that they could put the hitch and wiring on and it would pull 6,200 - having been told to get a vehicle that's rated for close to 1,000lbs above trailer weight. Now obviously DODGE and the dealer are providing false information - I've seen this 3,500lb remark several times but nobody has been able to tell me how they come to this conclusion and if there is definitive proof of it. If so, I'm sure we're not the only ones who were misled - the FIRST question we asked about the 2016 Limited was how much it would to IF THEY ADDED THE HITCH - the answer was 6,200lbs. A friend who hauls a boat called our salesman asking about the same model and specifically said he'd done a lot of towing and needed to know if it needed the factory installed package to pull 6,200 - also saying he had to add things to his truck. Our salesman said "let me get some info and call you back," when he did he said just what he did to us - IT WILL PULL 6,200 AND DOES NOT NEED A FACTORY INSTALLED PACKAGE OR ANYTHING UPGRADED TO DO SO. PLEASE....If you have PROOF send it to me - this sounds like something that could lead to a class action suit - we LOVE the DD and it pulls the trailer with ease - however when I added a brake controller (plug and play) with a factory matching adapter - it gets NO POWER. Camping World told us it was because the dealer failed to connect a line to the 20 amp fuse clearly marked "BRAKE CONTROLLER" we took it back and they wouldn't do it, saying we had to hook a wire up to the controller - but there's NO PLACE FOR IT. What do you think should be done about this? The first question we asked was if the 2016 Durango Limited would pull 6,200 without factory equipped tow package and the salesman said YES - he did the same when a friend called and asked. WE DID NOT HAVE THE DVD OWNERS MANUAL. All the research I did said 6,200 - now to see the owners manual with V6 Towing with a little 1 in a circle - click on it and it says "WHEN PROPERLY EQUIPPED." We were outright lied to - plus their wiring harness did not power the brake controller, WE HAVE TO TOW OVER 6,000 and said so - it says this question is popping up a lot - does anyone know an attorney to help us file suit? I have a friend that had a used car dealership for over 30 years, he says we should be given a brand new one WITH THE TOW PACKAGE - I can't believe this - I asked them for a DVD manual and they didn't have one so they said to download one. I say I had no way to do so - and never saw this little dot "when properly equipped" We need to handle this together - everyone who was fooled.
