I took my '11 Durango with 18 inch wheels in for an oil change and tire rotation today. The service guy said that some of the lug nuts were corroding and bulging and will cause problems down the road when trying to remove them again. He suggested replacing them at a cost of $225 for 20 lug nuts. Pretty spendy and the first time in my life I have ever heard of having to replace lug nuts. Anyone have issues with the lug nuts on your vehicle? Any suggestions on quality after market lug nuts I might obtain for less? Thanks.

 

I don't have any issues with the lugnuts (yet) on my 2011 Crew, but I do understand what the shop was trying to describe. Generally when the bulge happens though, going with a size up or one size slightly larger in SAE will allow a socket to fit securely and remove the nuts. It's best to replace them when that happens though. I would suspect you can get them, or a solid replacement, for less than $225 though.

Check a junkyard. They might just give them to you (I just picked up a handful). I replaced one on my '99 a couple of years ago - even the dealer had a hard time finding a replacement - an it was $$ more than I wanted to pay for a fifty cent item. After market didn't stock anything that would fit.

 

Find out what thread/size and lug nut type and get some McGards. Guaranteed for life not to rust. They are not the cheapest but in my opinion the best out there. Had a set on my power wagon in the 80's and they still have no rust on them!

Gorilla makes a good lug nut too. Not sure of the cost for 20 regular lug nuts.
I use Gorilla locking lugs on my DD and my Challenger too.

 

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have my home work to do now and not give the dealership a kings ransom for lug nuts.

Junk yard is most likely to be in the same condition. Gorilla lug nuts are the bomb. Stay away from anything that has the chrome "cap" on them. Make sure they are solid metal.

 

$11.25/lug nut?

Doesn't seem terrible actually. Buy 16 of them and get a set of locking lugs while you're at it to make it 20 total.
