For months my wife has been complaining that the air coming from the A/C stinks. I guess that I always knew that there was a filter, but it just didn't twig with me. Finally last week, I looked it up in the manual, there was the part. Went to "you tube" a nice video on where and how to replace it. A quick trip to pick up the part, 15 minutes to remove and install the new one and the smell is gone. Funny that none of the places that have done the oil changes have ever asked if I wanted it replaced.

 

I changed mine and now it makes a whistling noise because the tabs on the air filter box wont go back like it was when it was stock.....bummer.

 

I had to play with it for a minute or 2 until I saw exactly how it re-seated. I had to put the right side in first and it went under a flap, then the rest followed easily.

 

Me too but it still has a leak that you can hear when you turn up the fan.

 

Are you sure you placed the filter in right side up, and correctly aligned?

 

I thought I did but I guess I need to open it back up and take a second look.

 

The downside is that the sour smell is back.

 

I have the same issue you have. Replace the filter, smell is gone. Few weeks later, smell is back. Running the heat for a while helps though.

My 06 Magnum did the same thing, but when it did smell, you just removed the filter and cleaned the whole inside tray. But that was easy to do on that car. The access was under the hood so you just popped the cover and pulled the filter. Sometimes water would get in there and stink things up so cleaning it out fixed the problem. The Durango, not so much. You can't see crap.

I'm sure there is some kind of funk in the duct work before the filter, but I have yet to figure out a good way to get to it and clean it.
