Fiat Chrysler recalls 1.33M vehicles over airbag and fire concerns
Published July 14, 2017 Markets FOXBusiness.

DETROIT – Fiat Chrysler said Friday it is recalling over 1.3 million vehicles worldwide to fix malfunctioning alternators that can potentially spark fires and a wiring problem that can make air bags inflate unexpectedly.

The wiring recall covers nearly 771,000 Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont SUVs from 2011 through 2015. The company says wires can chafe against steering wheel trim, causing electrical short-circuits. That can set off the driver's front air bags, cause wipers to come on unexpectedly, cause switches to fail or illuminate the air bag warning lights.

Customers who see any of the issues should contact a dealer. Dealers will install a covering on the wires or replace them if needed. FCA says it knows of five minor injuries but no crashes.

The alternator recall affects nearly 566,000 Chrysler 300s, Dodge Challengers and Chargers and Durango SUVs from 2011 through 2014. Also covered are certain 2012 to 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees.

The company said it is aware of two potentially related accidents but no injuries.

The alternators can wear prematurely. That could cause engine stalling, compromise antilock brakes and electronic stability control and lead to fires. Basic braking isn't affected. Dealers will replace the alternators, the company said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

If I can get a new alternator at 100k miles for free, I don't see an issue.

That was my first thought as I intend to keep my '13 D for a good long while.

Does anyone know if it is ALL DD's in the date range or are there VIN groups? I Googled the recall and checked on the govt and Mopar site but no further info found.

Customer notices don't start going out until August, so perhaps the VIN ranges will be published closer to the notice mailings.

Default New Alternator.......again?

My DD has 93k miles.

The alternator that came with the vehicle failed during a roadtrip.

The replacement alternator was replaced during a recall. (And I got my money back).

So the current alternator will be replaced during this recall?

Claus
