Default 2015 Citadel NEEDS BRAKES AND ROTORS

2015 Durango Citadel The OEM Brakes and rotors are at their end of life stages (32,000 miles). Purchased the vehicle used at 20K miles.

Will need to replace the front and rear brakes and rotors soon. I've looked at AutoZone, Advance and Rock Auto for premium replacement brake pads and rotors. The selection for price range and quality are mind boggling.

I want a premium set of brakes and rotors but I don't want to purchase something that others have found to be substandard or purchase something that is too overkill for a daily driver that occasionally tows a heavy trailer.
Vehicle is on the heavier side so I want something that will not fade and work well.

What are some of your recommendations for a premium set of front and rear pads and rotors?

Vented or non vented rotors??
Coated or non coated rotors?

Any recommendations on what others have successfully used are much appreciated.

I will be doing the complete brake job myself, Replacing all the brake pad hardware, lubing the pins, and flushing the hydraulic system.

Thank you in advance.

Bill

I like ceramic pads and coated rotors.
Over the years I tried a couple sets of front vented rotors on my Ram. In my opinion they were a waste of money. I live with a winter climate and road salt. I found the drilled vents rusted over and the need to drill out the rust and brake dust at brake inspection time.

I should have been a little more descriptive with the vented rotor title. The rotors come in a solid rotor and a VENTED ( air vains in the center of the two rotor surfaces that direct cooling air between the two rotor surfaces..

If you had to pick between the two types of rotors, which one would you get?

I've already settled on the good ceramic pads and the coating. Just need some recommendations on the style of rotor for non racing driving but recreational driving needs.

I had an 06 Z51 Corvette and it came with factory drilled rotors. YES, they clog and have to be cleaned. They can also develop cracks between the holes!! Not needed or wanted. On the other hand, slotted rotors are functional and do work if warrented for sever duty. Helps clean the rotor surface and shed the dust off the pad.

Solid rotors are news to me for the big 3. Havent seen them for years and that was usually imports. I would stick with vented unless theres new technology I dont know about.

usually vented rotors are all you can get for the front and if you have an option for solid it will be rear only. I would replace with whatever is on the truck already and call it a day. the coating is just a cosmetic thing (prevents it from rusting as fast, it will still rust in good time, at least where i live). and i prefer semi-metallic pads over ceramic, sure they dust alot more, but the bite is better too, and the newer ones handle wider heat ranges. factory tends to use ceramics because they dust less and run a bit quieter which reduce customer complaints.

a vented rotor is better but you can't change what the truck came with. It would require a complete retrofit.

depends on your driving habits and how hard you use the brakes, my challenger got 35k on the factory pads (fronts, rears are still factory at 80k) and i was rubbing the feelers at that point, mostly around town driving, with some performance driving mixed in (autox, lite track days) my wifes car got 65ish on the factory pads, my truck has 71k on factory pads with still over 50% life left. Brake pad life is 100% dependent on your individual driving conditions, iv seen people go through pads in 20k miles to the point where they destroyed rotors. . . .

I usually get 50-60K+ miles out of any disk brake system. HOWEVER, I live in the Northeast and the roads are treated with that Calcium crap and everything rusts.
I still have some pad left on all four wheels but, the rotors are starting to pit on the rotor surface. Car still stops fine but, I have a very slight warped rotor pulsation on the front rotors. Nothing I cant live with. I'm just trying to plan ahead, decide what pads and rotors are best and not spend unnecessary money having to buy something at the last minute from some place that has more expensive parts.

All in all, I will most likely wait till the end of winter and do a complete brake job.
Soon, (approx. 2 yrs) I will be heading to West TX and I won't have to worry about **** poor winter road conditions. Then it will just be HEAT! LOL!
