Default Not happy Durango owner, engine rattle noise+ loss of performance?

2018 Durango GT, engine rattling noise under acceleration and normal driving?

Got a 2018 Durango lightly used with 2,800 miles. At first everything was working fine, later 8,000 miles here comes this engine rattling noise after a stop light or regular driving. It sounds like a head gasket if it helps any. Anyway when it rattles it looses acceleration and the engine just rattles. The other day I was going to church and had to accelerate to pass another SUV and here comes the rattle sound and truck hesitated to pass other SUV. It does this at any RPM and MPH, no specific timing. I only use 87 gasoline, tried 89 rating and still rattled. I change oil regularly. I took it back to original dealer and I even showed the service advisor the video of engine rattle and he heard it but the dealer could not duplicate the rattle. So now I have another appointment at a different dealer on the 21 of this month. I called FCA and they told me to get a second opinion before they can figure out how to handle this. I worry because my wife drives this daily with our son and I don't feel this is normal. Any input or anybody know what could be this engine rattle noise?

Current mileage 16,000 at the moment. Yes it's under warranty but first dealer couldn't figure it out.

You don't tell us much about your engine. Is it a V6 or V8? I had to look up the specs for a GT and it stated it was a V6. Does the rattle sound like ball bearings rattling in a coffee can? That could be engine pinging as a result of the computer not controlling timing properly. Or, there could be a belt pulley or idler pulley that is doing the rattling. In any case, sounds like using your warranty and getting the dealer to duplicate the issue is your best bet. Unfortunately today's mechanics, unless the engine throws a trouble code, don't know how to find an issue. It is not like the old days where a mechanic took a long screwdriver, put the blade end against the engine valve cover and the handle end against his ear and could tell you everything that could be wrong with the motor. I anyone on this forum experienced a similar issue they would chime in. Good luck with the dealer.

If you can duplicate the sound, take a service adviser on a drive with you and let them listen.

DDCREW, it sounds like head gasket sound and the engine hesitates and looses performance for a bit then go back to normal.
I also think it could be something with the computer of the engine not timing properly, or something loose somewhere.

Jkeaton, yes I will ask and see if they can go on a ride with me, didn't know we could ask.

Either way, it's frustrating because it's my wife's daily driver and I like to make sure everything works as it should and the first dealer could not diagnose it at all.

Head gaskets don't make sound....have you had it scanned for codes?

Jkeaton since it's under warranty I don't want just anybody touching it. You think if I take it to auto zone to have it scanned will cause an issue later on?

Typically, unless the Service Engine Soon light is on, there will be no codes stored. I'm sure when you took it to the dealer the first time they looked into it. Taking it to like an Auto Zone to scan for codes will not affect anything; if there are any, they should not erase them so the dealer can also see them. Best thing, since the car is under warranty, leave it with the dealer for a few days and ask for a loaner to give them the opportunity to have more time to find the issue.

DDCREW,

This truck is driving me crazy to the point where I no longer want it, honestly. Yesterday wife and I were trying to pull onto intersection and the truck made a loud engine noise and quickly jerked the truck forward, so now it's just giving me too many problems. I'm bummed, really like this truck but my safety is more important and that's my issue with it. We'll keep you updated.

Try turning off the stupid stop/start system and see if you still have issues. When you first start the car hit the little button with the "A" below the radio and see if any symptoms change . If not it almost sounds like a tranny issue .
