Hello! I have a ‘15 Durango Limited, and have an issue with the seatbelts.
The front passenger side seatbelt hasn’t been recoiling properly for the last few weeks, getting worse and worse by the day. Finally it jammed solid. Won’t recoil and we can’t pull it out. It’s stuck about halfway to being usable. Not great. I pulled it apart and found that the part up top that the belt goes through before going down to the recoil is all cracked and collapsed in on itself, trapping the belt. I pride it open a bit, just enough that the belt will move, it’s still too tight to recoil. I went to the dealer to price it out, to find out I have to replace the entire seatbelt system. $450. Now, I’m laid off, so that’s a hard no. My wife will have to sit in the back for now, no big deal. I got home and thought “I should check the others to make sure they’re good.” Turns our every single one (minus the middle lap belt, obviously) is doing the same thing to various degrees. I mentioned it to my family, and the kids said that the middle row belts haven’t been “going back in right” for a little while. Ok, not cool. Even the third row seats that are rarely used are like this. My wife is Facebook friends with the dealership managers wife, so she explained the situation to her and she relayed it to her husband (this is around 7 pm). I also emailed the service department and explained it to them. The managers going to see if Chrysler will pay for replacing these, sounds like he’s on our side on this, one point for me! Should hear from them hopefully next week. I’ve never seen this happen before, is it a common issue on Durango’s? I did a search here, but didn’t find anything. Is it safe to use? I don’t really have much faith that the seatbelts will hold up in an accident, so I won’t let the family use it unless we have no choice. Maybe everyone should check there’s, just to be on the safe side.
We love this SUV, and it’s been pretty good to us (except the water filling tail lights, and the continuously breaking gears for the temp blend doors). If
Chrysler won’t pay for it (and I’m not sure they would), we can’t pay to fix it (guessing around $4500 with tax and labour). So we’d either trade in on a new one, or park this. Not a fan of either. We looked at trading up last year, but we were told that Durango’s no longer have a bench seat in the second row, just buckets. We have three kids, and on grocery/Costco runs, we need them all in the second row to fit everything. I have an ‘11 Charger that’s parked until I get back to work that we can used, but it’s pretty cramped for a family of five.
I just love how life helps you out with fun little situations like this! Good times!
There looks to be other owners with the same issue as you describe. Check the NHTSA website for 2014 Dodge Durango recalls and under the subtitle Complaints there are 13 for seat belts. If the dealer/FCA does not fix it for free, also file a complaint with the NHTSA; enough complaints will generate a recall and then FCA will have to have every car that uses that seat belt guide recalled for inspection and free repair. Also, you can search the web if there are any TSB's for Durango seat belts.
Not a real rare problem, according to them. Just not enough to get a recall. I’m still waiting to hear back from the dealership, we’ve never had a problem with these guys, so hopefully they take care of it. It’s a small town, so I don’t reply want to go in there and start yelling at people I see all the time!
Ok, got this taken care of. Local dealership checked it over, took tons of pictures and sent them to the regional manager. Took about a week and a bit to hear back, but they changed them all out (minus the 2nd row ones that were still fine so far) under “goodwill warranty”. Got a call at 8:45 this morning that the parts were in, and they can do the work right away. Took a few hours, but everything’s good again! I lost the proximity system, but I fixed it (the connector for the rear sensor wasn’t plugged back in). Pretty happy with these guys!
I currently have the same issue with the passenger side seatbelt, been trying to get it repaired for over a year and half. Keep being told the part is on backorder. Mopar did not do a recall just sent a letter that extended the warranty on the seatbelts to 15 years, at this rate it will run out before I can get it fixed.
