Default 2014 Durango, R/H tail light stays on

Hi all! New account, can't remember my old user name from years back.

My wife noticed the RH (passenger side) tail/brake light was on this morning when she went into the garage. After pressing on the brake pedal (with car running), a message appeared stating the RH turn signal (rear) was out...so it's currently registering backwards. Pressing the brake pedal does not make the light go out, however. It's just on all the time. I disconnected the battery for the time being. Leading up to this, we noticed a hot, plastic/electrical smell when we got out of the car. I'm wondering if a wire melted and has shorted.

I have no idea where to start. I looked up in the fuse box and any exposed wires and/or harnesses I could see, but I'm not seeing anything obvious. I have to run out to church so I can't spend time with it yet. She was recently in a minor accident- someone hit her and the front bumper and associated parts in the area were replaced, but that was a couple of months ago.

It's a 2014 Durango AWD, Limited w/Premium, (3.6L if I remember right).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thank you, Rob.

I ended up taking it to the dealer yesterday morning. Hoping it falls under our extended warranty, as most things have so far. If I remember, I'll post back what they find out.

So the Dealer Rep just called. We put an aftermarket tow hitch and wiring harness on (installed at a shop). Looks like something went bad in that harness, because everything works normally when plugging back into the car directly. I told him to leave it unplugged as we don't tow our utility trailer with it anymore. So, thankfully, not a huge problem! I was worried for a while. Thanks again, Rob.
