The surface area of the panel filter is bigger than the surface area of "some" cones.
And I agree it is better for cold air. I was thinking of opening the side of the stock air box along the fender side. I think that might yield access to more air.

On my 5.9 the big issue seems to be that crappy caved in stock hat on the TB. I was thinking of using a hybrid of stock air box an a spectre TB hat that stands a little taller.

I like DIY mod experiments as long a they don't have a negative impact.
There is a lot to consider when talking about DIY cai's and it depends on what your ultimate goal is. I think we can all agree that the hemihat is restrictive, and that sucking up engine bay air is not exactly ideal. How you choose to remedy those situations is up to the individual. After reading a ton of posts I was going to do what hammer has done for a lot of them and build one out of pvc and modify the stock box to fit a cone filter in. I figured this would be the best situation as it got rid of hemihat and still used the stock airbox to get as cold as possible of air. I happened to run across an idea to a little different diy cai and went with this instead.

I think it is better in that it has a nice long smooth bend instead of multiple direct 90's. It is open to the engine bay, but I may construct my own heat shield at some point if I think the rest of my system (engine, exhaust) is good enough that the extra cold air will actually help. For now the extra flow seems to help. I also read a few posts by drewactual where he was pretty convincing that the extra few degrees doesn't help as much as you would think, especially for systems close to stock, that helped me make my final decision to go with what i have. However you choose to do it, it's a fun mod that is easy to do yourself with some nice results.

Lol you should sell your idea to a company, or on here lol people would be amazed you can make a CAI for under 12 dollars not including a filter

I bought my pieces at Home Depot. I had them in the cart when I went looking for the Sched40 3" 90 but they didn't have any. Oh well, 6-of-one, half-dozen the other lol

Haha, yeah no kidding. Im trying not to plaster it all over the place but i think it is a good improvement over what some people have done. This seemed like an appropriate place, maybe some others looking for diy cai ideas will run across it.

What? Dude, the gas never touches the cats. It's all carbon exhaust by the time it hits the cats.

Im reffering to the "Carbon Exhaust Gas", its in a gas state therefor making it a gas.
The ions platted in the Cat takes the bad out.
