I just bought a 2003 quad cab 1500 with the 5.7 HEMI - 146k miles. My 2001 Durango died after 211k miles (RIP) - the head cracked because of my own negligence.

On the way home from the dealership - 75 mile drive - with about 95% of that highway, it got exactly 20 MPG when I pulled into my driveway. I was happy with that. With mostly city driving in my daily life, it's getting around 15MPG. Sucks that it's worse than the 16.7 or so I was getting out of the Durango, but I have a HEMI now and the ladies love it, so I'm not complaining.

When I first got my Durango in 2009, I read on here about Star Tron fuel additive and used it in my Durango with almost every tank. It seemed to give me 1 more MPG or so on a good tank, and on a bad tank I wouldn't notice any MPG difference, but it always ran better with it in the tank as opposed to out of it. The engine just seemed much smoother and at a red light when idling it was very quiet. Does anyone use that with their 1500? Notice any difference?

Also, the truck came with a K & N air filter, is that nothing more than a fancy thing to look at under the hood, or does it actually make a difference?

I think the air intakes are a big waste of money. I noticed no difference in power or mpg gain at all.

From what Ive read on here most have had the same experience as me. Its just something to do so you can put it in the signature line.

I've seen a few threads where independent studies showed they were actually worse for your truck.

"Cherry Red Godzilla" 2012 RAM 3500 HD 8 foot bed Dually, Mopar heavy duty mud flaps.
Initial MPG was 12/15 empty and 12 towing 6000lb.
Now she's 5000 miles and I added rolling bed cover.
MPG increased : 13.5/16.2 empty 13.5 towing 6000lb.

Congratulations on getting 16.7 mpg out of a Durango. That has to be the absolute best I've ever heard of. Sounds to me like your quoting mpg from the hemi from the overhead console. I believe when you do the math on the Hemi it will be lower than what it is registering. I hope not but overhead console reading is almost always wrong

because of the way chrylser tuned the hemi motor the truck or car fight the change of an intake causing little difference. and if you expected major change from just an intake you should gather more info before buying one
best for MPG is intake, cat back and a tuner
cat back by itself will give you a little more than anything, by itself, because the computer doesn't notice the change.

I also have exhaust. No tuner. Don't want to strain an already questionable transmission.
