I've read about this a hundred times in different places, and tried it dozens but in my experience it doesn't help for squat!
I can keep the rpms under 2k, **** off the people behind me and get 11mpg in the city.
Or I can drive it normal with a few shifts at 4500 rpm and get 10mpg in the city.
So even though I coast, accelerate very slowly, and keep out of the gas the savings is poor.
Of course 90% of my driving is city and usually no more than 40mph and 5 miles each way.

The hills might contrubute a little but your driving style contributes the most. Remember for every hill you go up there's another going down. As far as driving style layoff he heavy foot on the gas followed by just as heavy or heavier foot on the brake and you will be surprised how much fuel this saves, add some coasting in there and you'll get 12 - 13 mpg
