Here are two credible sources regarding the illegality of aftermarket HIDs. One is from the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA), it's hard to get more credible than that. Just in case you don't think SEMA knows anything about aftermarket lights, I've included a link from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) themselves.

Here is an opinion from SEMA regarding there interpretation of the FMVSS- http://www.sema.org/files/attachment...rsion-Kits.pdf

Here is a letter written by the NHTSA to a HID vendor. Notice the letter is from the NHTSA website- http://isearch.nhtsa.gov/files/deetz.ztv.html

NHTSA has concluded that it is impossible to produce HID conversion kits (converting a
halogen system to HID) that would be compliant with the federal lighting standard, Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108.

lol, nuff said

Oh really? If they're so widely available why can't anybody link to a single law? Or is that just my childish blabbing again? Let's see you prove me wrong if it's so easy to do.

And neither of those sources is a LAW. It backs up exactly what I stated -- that you cannot manufacture or import HIDs in or for projector housings. They have no jurisdiction to prevent you from doing it yourself.

All the "countless threads" on the subject deal with people parroting what they've heard from other people. I haven't seen a single law on the subject yet, and a LAW is the only thing police can enforce.

You're being moronic. Who the heck do you think interprets the federal DOT LAWS? The NHTSA does!

The LAW is the Federal Lighting Standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108. Stop being a lazy ***. I've given you the law and it's interpretation buy the FEDERAL AGENCY responsible for implementing it.

This topic comes up every now and then on this police forum. This was in the "ask a cop" section, so only law enforcement can reply.

George your attitude sucks.

Without getting into law specific details..Here are facts:

HID's installed in Halogen reflector housings produce more glare to oncoming cars. Now, that's not saying the other car cannot see, but the light is much brighter and more glare is produced thus "blinding" which is a word that is thrown around a little too casually IMO.

I know I've seen many posts with guys saying their HID's don't blind oncoming traffic, yet they have been flashed. If they say "well, i've only been flashed twice in 2 months so they can't be that bad". How about i have only been flashed for stock halogen low beams like twice in my entire life. This means your blinding oncoming vehicles and you deserve to be pulled over and harrassed by the cops regardless if they try and give you a ticket or not.
I could give two craps about the law at this point. people who put HID's in their headlights and knowingly blind other people or who say "F" the other drivers are being inconciderate and selfish. All the extra things that you can see takes away from the other drivers. So the more you see, the less they can see.

Even if You are right and there isn't a Law....That makes it okay in your books? Taking advantage of other people isn't illegal either. Does it make it right?

I know lots of guys have the kits on here because they are cheap and easily installed. My reccomendation as always is to turn them down a bit to help others out.
