Yes it is like jailbreaking. However, Android is much easier to run 3rd party software on already. There are what are called "1 click rooting" apps out there that are MUCH easier to use than what has been posted for you. Rooting also allows you to delete or uninstall a lot of OEM software (bloatware) that comes with the device that you may not want and takes up OS memory. Android 2.2 will not be release for Hero BUT through rooting you can install a custom variant of 2.2 on the Hero and let me tell you, with the JIT compiler in 2.2, it will make the Hero MUCH faster. You will be happy with it again. PM sent.

It works. However, do not expect ANY free app that works off GPS (positioning and speed) along with an G-sensor to work better than an actual dyno. These are more for fun.

That is a very old and outdated way of rooting. He has Android 2.1, not 1.5!! If you do not know how to root, please DO NOT google and post links on it as you will confuse and potentially cause someone to damage thier device.

I've got it installed but don't have the obdll bluetooth transceiver for it yet.
IDK how it compared honestly. I usually do not use these apps but had a friend send this to me so i thought i would share since I thought some guys would enjoy it. Again, dont expect real actual numbers from it as compared to actually getting on a dyno.

XDA forums is a great site but again, that is a very outdated way to root. There are simple "1 click" GUI apps now that allow you to root and unroot at a click of a button.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are lots of ways to root. But more importantly you need to find out IF you NED to root and WHY. Secondly, not ALL root methods are the same as there are many Android devices out there and many Android versions. Rooting is actually very simple as compared to how it used to be when having to use ADB but if not done right you can and possibly will brick your device.

So if ANYONE out there does not know specifically about rooting per a specific device, please dont just google and post. I know that works with Dodge trucks but it does not work well with Android OS's and rooting.

I have worked with Windows Mobile for years and overclocked them and tones of reg editing for cleaner and more stream-lined ROMs including custom ROMs.

I do the same on Android (minus the reg editing). So be careful and enjoy them.

Im not going to get into rooting devices here because 1) this thread is already in the wrong place as it should be in the General section but I put it here to hopefully catch more attn and help some guys out and 2) rooting devices is way out of Dodge Ram support and scope

With that being said, i will post this one link to a Universal 1 Click Rooting app for several devices

http://jaxov.com/2010/09/universal-a...c-dell-streak/

if anyone has any Qs please PM me

Whoops totally my bad. I must have posted a wrong link. I know had a 1 click 2.1 root but I must have grabbed somethin else. Sorry bout that! And i have to agree you should know what root is and if you really want to root. I rooted my eris a while ago and got froyo mainly because 1. its slow. 2. verizon and htc dropped support on the eris. and 3. I like having SU control and everything that goes with it. Its not for beginners and not for someone who has no clue what it means or does. You can brick your phone then your **** outta luck!

When I ask about working, I mean in the ballpark of real dyno numbers. I had one before that was completely off on what it would say. Either it was thousands of horsepower or it wouldn't even pick up at all and didn't register movement whatsoever.

And a little bit off topic, you said in the other thread that you have a Droid X, how much do you like that phone? I've got to warranty my phone which is the first Droid, and I'm not going to take a Droid that was sent in previously, so I'm going to make sure that I get the upgrade to either a Droid 2 or Droid X but not sure what I want.

Usually VZW will not exchange one device to another unless you have had 3 devices previously and something has been wrong with them. Good luck though. Sometimes you get someone who doesnt care or is willing to help.

As for the DX v/s the D2, the DX has a better camera, more ROM memory, bigger screen. Both come with the same OEM software. I used to have to have a physical keyboard but with the DX you dont need it. The screen is plenty big and the OEM KB is actually very well laid out and has nice size keys. I also have Swiftkey and Swipe but find using the OEM KB (surprisingly) is enough for me. I have the HDMI software to unlock the HDMI port on the DX if you want it and get the DX.

Both the DX and D2 are much faster that then D1. The D1 has a 550mhz cpu whereas theses are now 1ghz.

I've had several problems with my D1s. I know that they don't make them anymore and they have big problems. And if they don't give me a different phone, I'll just buy one brand new and sell the other one that I get to replace my D1. It'll be worth a few extras $ to me to upgrade to a phone that's not a POS.
