Thanks everyone for your input above...greatly appreciated...helps me a lot in making a decision. I especially like this comment about trading on CL...I was thinking about doing the same exact thing. Alright, I'm going to post the pics up on CL and see what kinda deal I can get out of this!
You should make out fairly well, the younger crowd is into bigger wheels these days and the stock flower pedal ones are in pretty big demand. My neighbor had to buy one (wife went off the road on a concrete culvert during a heavy rain storm when there was about a foot of standing water on the roads and she couldn't see where road stopped, demolished that rim!) He went straight to dealer and if memory serves, paid over $400 FOR ONE!
Not that you'll get that much, but you should easily get enough to cover the cost of some fairly nice 17s anyway...

i know this an old post but i have been considering this for awhile. my tires on my stock 20" wheels are good but will be looking for new tires b4 the winter prob late summer/fall. i am pretty sure i am going to find some stock 17" wheels and have them powdercoated. as for tires.... not sure i have been looking at the different nitto's. prob go with a 33"? my truck has a leveling kit its a slt 4x4 reg cab etc. everything else is stock. anyone have a similar set/wheels tires. my truck is driven 90% of the time on the highway. i use it a few days a week year round towing, pulling stumps w/winch yard work and so on. any thoughts on a good setup for me would be appreciated. thanks mike

Bigger wheels have less rolling resistance. depending on your use, you may be stepping backwards. towing; 17" offer more rpms=more power=more tow capacity, lowers the truck and center of gravity = better handling. Highway crusing and grocery trips may use more fuel, however.
17" also offers cheaper tires.
you could go with lower profile 20" tires, say a 255 or 265 with a 40 or 50 series tire?
the'll cost more , but not as much as 17" wheels AND tires.
I'm in the same boat as you with 20" wheels (occasional tow of 6500lbs). good news is the factory 20" wheels are aluminum. I may go lower profile the next set of tires, but for me that will be years to come since we dont drive the truck regularly. (2004 QC hemi 4x4 just clicked 80K miles)
