yeah engaging it is always best but when there isn't enough snow on the ground for me not to worry about doing damage to expensive parts and i could get up a 2 foot incline without sliding sideways no matter how gentle i was on the long skinny pedal, def needed some weight.

Well here in grande priairie alberta the city never plows the roads or rarely puts any sand either so with my short wheelbase i put 425lbs in the back an i actually scaled it at my work i was with me in it with full tank of fuel the truck on front axles was 1460 kg and 1160 so equals a 5770 lb truck lol my my chubby a@# and the front end is still alot heavier close to 1000lbs so i think 400 is fine.
Still alot lighter than driving around with a 800lb quad!!!!

Ive got a giant porter tire in the bed of my truck, im not sure what it weighs but its friggen heavy. Works good, I used to use sand bags in my trucks but the bags would always rip, so I started using tractor tires or machinery tires, theyre easy to move around, and easy to put in and out of the bed.

I never heard of this before or the logic behind it. Could you explain it better because I'm sure that I am not the only who hasn't heard about this and would like to know so that I can save my transmission from any potential damage.
