Default Thoughts on 1500 with 2500 upgrades

Ok first off I know anything is possible and everyone says "Sell the 1500 buy a 2500!!" But I like and KNOW my truck I've done the dirving and upkeep on it for the last 5 years, so here I go.

I've seen the 1500 Megga-Cab, one of my officers had one. It comes with with 2500 hubs and axles and whatever. My question is can 2500 hubs and suspension components be bolted on/ replace the 1500 components?? I've looked at the pieces and they are very similar. As a matter of fact they all look like a "Heavier Duty" version of 1500 parts. I'm talking the uper and lower A-arms and balljoints and the rest of the suspnsion parts. Bassically I want to turn my truck into a HD 1500. I'll even get another 8-lug rear axle. Check out a Hemi 2500 components and you'll see what I mean. Thanks H-

A Mega 1500 is basically a 2500. It shares more than just axles with a 2500. It's frame is also that of a 2500.

You could pull it off and it has been done, but you better have some real good fabrication skills and a pretty good shop to do the work in.

IMO the 1500 is pretty stout, when compared to Ford and Chevy 1500s at least of the same years as the 3rd Gens. They have both done a lot in the last two years to increase tow and haul capacities, while RAM has gone the other way with the 4th Gens and gone for handling and over-all comfort.

The 1500 is pretty durable provided you don't try to put bad angles on the CV axles. But I've personally seen five broken CVs and four were Chevy 1500s. In every case they were with 35" tires or larger. The other weakness IMO are that some front end components wear and must be completely replaced, but I blame this more on the fact that some "genius" engineer decided to use all non-greasable components on the Ram...

Actually, the 1500 (non magecab) and 2500 suspension and axle components are not interchangeable whatsoever. They are completely different. The half tons have IFS (with "A-arms" like you commented about) while the 2500-3500 (and megacab 1500's) have solid front axles. Totally different setup's that requires LOTS of fabrication/skills/tools to change from on to the other.

My suggestion... sell your truck and buy a 2500.

One question. Are you referring to 2wd's or 4wd's? Cause the 2wd 3/4ton and 1 tons do indeed have the same type of suspension in essence (no solid axle)... but the half ton components are going to be much smaller in design (like you have stated), and simply swapping them for each other is VERY extremely highly super duper unlikely.

Thanks for the input guys.

And yes sorry my "Brandie" is a 2WD not a 4wd (NO front axle, A-arms and Coil Springs). Some of you may remember I'm having vibration problem since the new tires. I replaced both driveshaft U-joints and had the tires/wheels re-balanced 3 times. So I'm looking at the wheel bearings, which are a total hub replacement.

The 1500 - vs - 2500 Hubs look pretty much the same just 5-vs-8 lugs on the 2WD. So that got me thinking about the upgrade. But after looking in the CarPartsWholesale.com site I see that they have SRT-10 2WD front end components and they are just HD 1500 parts. Same style as what I have just HD parts. So if thy're good enough for a SRT-10 (my dream truck) then they are good enough for my "Brandie" So I'll build her into a Faux SRT-8. BTW I'll never part with her, I'll just keep her and keep the replacement parts companies happy. I will eventually have to get a day vehicle, maybe a Diesel VW 35 + MPG BMWs cost too much.

BTW #2 I was thinking about a Cummins swap into my 1500 that is why I thought of the HD upgrades now. Those Cummins into Ram 1500's are getting big down here in GA, Thanks H-

You'll def need to upgrade the front end if you're thinking of putting a cummins in there!
