key fob help
i bought a used key fob for my truck off of ebay and it arrived today but when i went to the site for instructions http://www.programyourremote.com/
it said i need one working remote to program it or i have to go to a dealer!
is this true? im sure it is but was wondering if someone knows how to do this at home?
also does anyone know ballpark what the dealership might charge for something like this? i tried calling but theyre closed for the day allready

Yep, you must have a working fob to add a fob. Some locksmiths can do this for you, but it'll cost 'bout what the dealer will charge. I've read $45 to $80 to program a fob. More if it's a security key.
How did you know what fob to buy without an original?

well when i was looking at them on ebay i did a search for dodge ram 2500 key fobs and when i clicked on this one it had you enter your vehicle make model and year and said whether or not it was compatible and it told me it was.
now im hoping it works but if the dealership tells me it doesnt i will definately be getting a refund!

There are at least two fobs (maybe more). The eBay vendor I got mine from posted the FCC number. The FCC numbers must match, or the fob won't work. Hope you got lucky. Come to think of it, how do you know you have keyless entry?

well ive got to say i didnt really do my homework on this one!
i asumed "lol" that being a higher end truck and the fact that his automatic locks that it probably had keyless entry and also the truck was turned in by the previous owner missing alot of stuff!
horns, owners manual, fog lights, tailgate, wheel hub covers, floor mats, etc. so i figured the key fobs didnt make it as well.
anyway i can find out whether i made a moronic purchase or not?

No matter what there's is always a key on the drivers side door the only way I could tell is by the owners manuel but you said that's was gone to so not sure how you would figure out

Yes, that's a definite sign. The O/M won't tell if the vehicle has the feature, only how to use it "if equipped".
actually i forgot to mention that the reason i initially thought it had keyless entry was the lack of a keyhole on the passenger side of the truck!!
it was getting very annoying when trying to unlock to let the wife and kids in so thats when i decided to look for a fob!

well heres an update for anyone who may come up against this problem in the future.
after a couple stops and several phone calls to locksmiths one who said it would cost at least $75.00 because he was a mobile locksmith and another who said they didnt have the software to program it, i wound up back at my local dodge dealerships service dept. expecting it to be in that $50 to $80 range, well luckily they charged only $25.20 to program my fob!!!
needless to say i was surprised at how cheap it was! so anyway now i have a programmed remote and im not stuck with the key and the one keyhole anymore!
