2008 3500 Cummins AA rear carrier bolts loose

2008 3500 Cummins AA rear carrier bolts loose
The pinion side carrier cap bolts are loose such that the cap moves freely 1/4". Is this common? Gear noise started at about 30k and got bad enough to check at 50K. Also have pulsing (grinding?) sound. Gear teeth look OK. To dealer Monday.
