car audio, burb to a ram
Im visiting home for a while and my 1988 suburban is just sitting in the driveway. so i decided to to some audio shuffling. im gunna swap my after market head unit out of it and put it in my dodge. i also have a new set of MTX 3 1/2 inch speakers that i never got around to installing into the dash. and a set of 6x9 pioneers that were supposed to go into the back of the burb. My truck is a 2004 RC st. is there a slot for the MTX speaker in the dash? and is there anywhere where i can mount the 6x9 or are they just a lost cause? when i bought my truck from the used car dealership it came with 2x12 subs, tweeters in the headliner in the back corners and a 1400watt amp and a CAP.
Well depending on the model(i think) you should have speaker cut outs on your dash, if you do then the 3 1/2's will work, you will just need to run wires. As for the 6x9's thats the stock size that come in our doors....So you should be fine.
after i took the speakers out i found out that they are not 6x9 instead they are 4x10.... i haven't cracked into door panel yet. will they fit or am i screwed? also do you know where i can dig up a wiring diagram im gunna have to splice all the wires from the new head unit.
i would pick up some 3 way 6x9's off amazon for ebay (around $60 for a good set). they fit in the doors no problem, but I had to use the existing speakers mounting bracket to make it fit the hole and be deep enough. The brackets didnt fit my pioneer's so i cut off the tabs and ****'s and they worked great.
in the dash you should have empty 3 1/2 holes as mentioned above, unless you had premium sound, then there would be speakers there (and i think one in the middle)
in my std cab there are 5 1/4 in the rear, i wish i bought 6 1/2 components and made them fit but i bought 5 1/4 components and had to use a special bracket to get them to fit good. 6 1/2 might require enlarging the opening though.

You can fit a 6 1/2 without any modification, the biggest thing about our doors is they arent that deep, so you need to be aware of that and pick the speaker accordingly.

He wasnt asking if he could put the supposed-"6x9's in the back of the Ram. That was for the 'burb.
No, 4x10's won't fit in the front doors as they are too long. most aftermarket 6x9's are a tight squeeze in the front doors and most need a spacer. My Polk audio's I used to have came with 3/8" spacers which were hardly enough to make them fit.
As for the dash, the 3.5's that go in there are a slim 3.5". You will likely need to cut some plastic to make them fit...not 100% sure as I don't have 3.5's in the dash. speakers bouncing off the windshield just sound terrible and ruin the sound stage. Most like the sound, but only because they are oblivious to what a stereo should sound like. I mean it is a truck after all, but I'm an audio freak..haha
Rear doors are 5.25" for older years and 6.5" for 06+ years.
