Well lets see, why did Dodge build the Mega cab?
A. To have the interior capacity to fit possibly 6 fullsize people and their gear comfortably. That could add up to almost a ton of weight in the cab so the solid axle is justified.
Remember all the front end problems they had when the cummins first came out?
They learned from their mistakes!

They are on the 3/4 ton frame to get the GVWR needed to handle the weight of the Mega-cab. Notice they stopped offering the 1500 version which had about a 300lb lower GVWR then the 2500 version. I would guess they were trying to compete with the Toyota Mega-cab so they put it in a 1500 version. They also don't offer the diesel in the 1500 but they are in the 2500 and 3500. The 2500 Mega-cab with diesel had a payload of around 1600lb in the 2006 year. Notice the toyota Mega-cab has a smaller bed to help keep the weight down.

Available in Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 models, all 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cabs are built on the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty structure. Chassis, frame, axles, wheels
interesting,, facts...
