will the cover lock automatically when extended and the gate is closed, or do you need to purchase the lock for it? I didn't purchase the lock assuming that it would lock when the gate is closed, and that the lock was for additional security.

The cover will not lock automatically. However, the cover comes standard with a lock on the driver side, next to the cab. The cover locks independently of tailgate meaning that you can operate the cover without operating the tailgate and vice versa. You will need a locking tailgate in order to have a secure bed.

Locks keep honest people out, they can all be broken into no matter how well the covers made. I simply like one to extend the time it takes to grab the closet gun and fire a shot!
