Newer API restrictons have forced manufacturers to use lower viscosity oils to improve efficiency. This does not mean it's better for your engine. It's actually worse. They have also demanded extended oil change intervals on what the manufacturer can allow. No manufacturer can mandate 3kmi oil change intervals which is why they are all 5-7.5kmi now.
I use whatever High grade Synthetic is on sale. Mobil1 or Valvoline.
I also pour in a small amount of Lucas Engine break-in additive with each oil change. Engine break-in is formulated with 5-6000ppm of Zinc additive(ZDDP). I put this in because the newer API class of oils has 1/2 the amount it used to. API restrictions cut the zinc from 1600ppm to 800ppm about 10years or so ago. ZDDP is an anti-wear agent and they reduced the amount because it supposedly reduces the life of catalytic converters. Who cares. I can replace a cat for $150 vs an engine that costs several thousand. The newer blends of "Gas Saver" oils or "Recycled" oils have only 700ppm of ZDDP resulting in even more wear for your engine. Yeah, they ceratinly don't advertise your engine suffers. All they say is ooohh, get .00001 more mpg. Go stuff it. Damn tree huggers.
Race blend oils are not restricted and aren't forced to obide by API requirements. Most Race blends are 10w-30 and higher though but contain much more anti-wear agents including 3-4000ppm of ZDDP and other restricted compounds that API doesnt allow.
GM's dexos I and II don't meet API requirements and have actually boosted API to make some changes for the worse. Pretty soon, I bet all you can get is Synthetic oils because they are created by man made dericatives which will save on the amount of crude oil used/wasted.
