Putting a fishing rod holder in my leer topper. Thoughts?

This is pretty much what I bought. I'm wondering if I should screw these right into the fiberglass of my topper. In the middle inside top it seems to be a little deeper fiberglass than the rest. I want to go as deep as possible without coming out the top.. Another idea I had was maybe using Velcro. IDK if anyone has done anything like this before. I saw it in an aisle at cabelas and thought it would be a neat addition to my truck so my poles just don't chill with all my other ****.

Yep, have done this inside of SUV cabs (interior roof), exterior on luggage racks and have made a couple for camper tops.
When I get home tonight and on my PC I will hunt you down some pics....
