What do you guys think about the 12v cummins?
I might be getting lucky and having a guy buy my truck for 10k. In the next few weeks.
Here is the truck I am thinking about has only 204k its a 96 12v.
http://www.baileysusedcarscentralore...?VID=154154101
already has the spendy part out of the way looks like a 5" or 4" straight threw exhaust.
Drove it today and WOW big difference. I am just amazed by the power these have.
There are no leaks. I checked. steering is really straight. Engine looked clean from popping the hood. I am just not too familier with what i should be looking for.
Also looked like it had a after market bracket on the steering.
All bushing are not cracked.
Has no gauges I know if I do buy that will be the first thing. And basicly everything else is mechanical to get boost up right?
One big thing that is worrying me and I asked it about the pump. He said he has no records of anything on the truck because of a patriot law about privacy when you buy a repo car no records go with it.
So would just like your guy's info on this.
Oh and price it is 8495.
Thanks,
Brett

I'd buy it. Best diesel engine in history, period.
As for the pump, there is a break-off screw on the AFC housing; if the pump has been played with, there will be a standard screw or bolt in there in place of the break-off screw. Bottom of page 1 here shows a drawing: http://www.tstproducts.com/pdffiles/INSRUCT98.pdf
In the event the pump has been adjusted, that's not really a bad thing. If it blows no more than a little puff of smoke on quick acceleration, it's likely not turned up.
Truck looks to be in great shape, drivers' seat does have a tear that's taped up, but that's easily remedied.

Well, my personal preference is for the '04 1/2 - '07 5.9, but basically the 5.9 (unlike the 6.7) is pretty much bullet-proof. I'm still kicking myself in the **** for not buying a new '06 that my buddy who was service manager at the local dealership called me about when they special ordered it for a guy who backed out. I could have just about had it for what I could have sold my '04 gasser for but I had just bought my 4" lift kit which was sitting in the garage waiting for me to install it so I said no. Yeah - I was a dumbass.
I'd say $8000 for a '96 with 200k is about right if it's in real good shape. With it being a "repo" though I'd have it checked by a mechanic first. Better to pay $75 and be able to back out than over $8k and find it NEEDS major work...

Yeah thanks for the info. One more I was looking at but its 4 hours away. Looks like more of a truck. And comes with a 90 day buy back grantee. So I fill a lil bit safer with that.
The truck is a 99 f250 with the 7.3 which I know is the one to buy.
Take a look and give me some input. I never have owned either so that is why I am asking. I know it will be a lil bias on a dodge forum but feedback is feedback.
Clean carfax and all.

The Cummins is the cream of the crop, but the only Ford diesel engine I'd ever own is a 7.3 - problem is they are getting long in the tooth and ragged around here. I had an early '90s one that I pulled a bass boat with all over the south east for about four years. Engine was solid but the thing absolutely ate ball joints.
Problem is with it being tuned - I'll bet it was run HARD...

I would not touch a powerstroke with a 10ft pole. (Well maybe I would, if cummins ever stopped existing...and I had to choose between it and a dirtymax)
A 98.5 2500 with a 12 valve is, in my opinion, the best, most bullet proof truck ever made, and apparently are getting rare as unicorn's ***** to find without being beat.
As another fellow said before me, they don't swap cummins into a ford for no reason. How many dodge's do you hear of getting a powerstroke put in?
On the farm we've got probably half a dozen cummins in varying sizes, one detroit, a few john deere's (essentially detroits), 2 little yanmars and one ivecco. Cummins are by far our favorite, but the 60 series detroit we've got is giving them a run for their money. We will never own a cat.

I'll agree, in terms of reliability and longevity, the 7.3 is the best diesel Ford had. Power? That goes to the 6.4. But...it's still a 7.3 Powerstroke.
You know the joke about winning the Special Olympics right? Same thing here...
And before someone chooses to get their panties in a bunch over the above joke, save it. It's a joke...I didn't make it up
