Decided to convert my reverse lights to H3 100w today because I can never see crap when I back up. Got this idea from a guy with a furd.

First I bent the circular tabs up a little on the bulb, then finished the bend with channel locks.


Following two pics are the result.



Next I drilled an 1/8" hole in the back of the bulb holder. Doesnt have to be dead center, a little toward the top or bottom of the bulb slot is better so the power lead for the bulb goes through easily.



Next I cut the end off of the wire and fed it through the hole I drilled. The "ends of the taco" I made when I bent the tabs up needed to be ground down a little as well.


After that it was just a matter of pushing the bulb into the slot and putting a dab of silicone on the backside of the hole to seal it.




I stopped taking pics here because it was pretty standard from here on out. Ran a 30a fused 12ga line down the drivers side, getting it in the wire loom that's already there as much as possible. Once back there wired up a 40a relay. Cut the 12v lead for the reverse lights (bottom pin on my '04 wht/grn wire but may be different for you) that goes into the plug for the tails for two reasons, 1: if you left it there it would be a short to ground because the bulb touches both prongs in the housing, and 2: I used it as the signal for the relay to turn on. After that its just running wire from the relay to driverside light, quicksplice and run it to the passenger side. Be sure to cut and terminate the same 12v lead on the passenger side as well.

So In short:
12v lead from pin in connector ----> pin 86 on relay
Ground ----> pin 85 on relay
Fused power from battery ----> pin 30 on relay
Power out to bulbs ----> pin 87 on relay

Not sure yet. Not really in the mood to stand behind a truck thats in reverse without me in it lol. That and it just got dark.

 

EDIT: Just realized I put in the 55w bulbs I had, not the 100w ones. Pics to follow of them in action when I replace them tomorrow.

Even with the ****ty 55w bulbs, wayyy brighter than stock 3057

 

Word to the wise...shut the truck off, then put it in reverse, with the key on.

 

The wise have faltered. Truck will not shift to reverse unless running.

 

Sure it does....if you have a 5 spd manual.....

 

Are you serious? I do this all the time to check the reverse lights for a safety inspection...but now I can't specifically recall doing a 3rd gen ram...
