i have a 2002 ram 1500 with 118K, it is an awesome truck with almost everything back to new, but i am burning oil and asking 1. should i rebuild it or 2. have a crate 4.7 installed?

 

I wouldnt trust a dodge ram that had 100k. Don't get me wrong, I know that there are some that make it way up there in mileage, but unless it's a diesel I don't trust it once it gets over 100k. I have seen way to many rams that turn to **** from working at a used car lot.

 

It's a crap shoot for sure... The 4.7 in my old Grand Cherokee took a sh*t at 102k miles and that engine was OVER maintained from the day I bought it in '06. Of course my rebuild would have been fine and probably lasted another 100k miles minimum had the shop I chose for the head work not totally f*cked up a head. My total rebuild costs came in at just a hair over $2000.

On the flip side, I personally know two people with over 250,000 miles on 4.7s and one guy with almost 280,000 miles on a Hemi and none of the three have had to do any engine work on them to date.

On anther note - I also know two Furd 6.0 diesel truck owners who have had to have complete engine rebuilds BEFORE 80,000 miles...

 

fords diesels other than the 7.3 were all garbage imo
